I enjoy cruising rivers and canals in my 2012 R27. In my professional life, I had layovers in Nottingham, England and our hotel was near one of the many canals in the UK. I used to walk along the canal towpath and look at the “narrow boats” that were tied up to the sides of the canal and watched others cruise the canal and transit a manually operated lock. After my upcoming retirement, I’m considering traveling to the UK to charter a narrow boat for a canal cruise.

On YouTube, I recently came across a series called “Great Canal Journeys” produced by Channel 4 in the UK. It follows a couple as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary year by cruising canals in England, Wales, and Scotland on a narrow boat. It’s very well done and has become very popular. It’s grown into 30 episodes and expanded its scope to canals in France and Canada’s Rideau Canal.

So, if you’re cooped up because of the pandemic and want a boating fix, it’s worth a look. Here’s a link to the first episode:

We did the Oxford Canal years ago in a 40' rental from Rose Narrowboats in the UK. One of our very best trips, but remember to bring a raincoat! (Actually the charter boats came with rain slickers included.) Highly recommended, with plenty of pubs along the way for meals.
