.. I found an older reference to the Golden rod heaters used to keep moisture at bay in the engine compartment ( R21) .. does any one have first hand experience with it and would it make it possible to leave the batteries installed ? .. does keeping the charger plugged in generate heat within the batteries ? TIA .. Rob

We have a golden rod in our boats engine compartment (R31) in the Pacific NW. I can't really say it does a lot for moisture or not, but I don't notice any moisture when I open it up and remove it before running the engine. They do keep the engine room a happy temperature, which is why we have it in the boat.

Hi Rob,

Last year, through the winter, I used golden rods for warming the engine compartment and a space heater and humidifier for the cabin on my R21-EC. I keep the R21-EC on its trailer next to the house and under a sunbrella cover.

To get power to the heaters I use a power cord from the house to the boat, then 3 extension cords branch to the shore power receptacle, the engine compartment through the fire extinguisher hole, and to the cabin through the anchor chain locker.

I checked the temperature of the engine compartment and cabin during a cold spell when the outside temperature was near 32F. With 2 of the 36 inch goldenrods inside the engine compartment the temperature was 52 F. The cabin temperature when using a Caframo dehumidifier and a Caframo space heater was 44F.

To monitor temperature I'm using 3 wireless temperature sensors made by Acurite which connect to my home wifi then to an android app on my phone. With the three sensors I can monitor temperature and humidity outside, in the engine compartment, and in the cabin.

During cold spells I'm checking engine compartment and cabin temperatures frequently.

I'm not sure about your batteries questions but I do keep the charger on at all times.

Hope this helps,

Bob

,, thanks .. that helps .. I'm not heating the cabin because the heater core runs off the closed engine system , the same as a car.. and has anti-freeze in circulation .. so just a DRZ-Air container in a bucket that last 4-5 weeks per charge .. no cushions or fabric material in the cabin, so if I can find a smaller Golden Rod for under the engine box things should be ok .. everything is under tarp ... with the battery charger plugged in and the GR, that should be safe to leave the batteries in place ..

.. does anyone know of a Canadian outlet for the Golden Rod ? .. no one is stocking them in the lower mainland Vancouver area .. Thx
