Aftervan 800 mile tow and a few months of storage my Raymarine C120w is not picking up any satellites. It worked prior to that so I suspect a connection came loose somewhere. It is not obvious to me where the GPS antena cable terminates or plugs in to the system. The area behind the C120w looks like a rats nest to me.

Any suggestion on a troubleshooting strategy?

Thanks.

Elly:

A few things come to mind for me (probably because this has happened to me) and maybe you've already done this. First you should check each of the incoming connectors to the back of the RayMarine C120 to ensure that each is not come loose during your 800 mile tow, tighten as necessary and while your back there check around to make sure a connector has not fallen away from its receptacle on the back of the C120 and if so reconnect. Next I'd check to make sure all of your power switches have been turned on for your electronics at your breaker panel. Lastly I'd check to see if any fuses to your electronics have not come loose or burnt out for some reason. Let us know what corrects the problem.

Anyone now how the gps antenna end terminates?

Does it plug directly into the sea talk connector or or is there a secondary connection?

Gotta keep this thread alive. I'm having the same problem. Every thing works but the GPS. Stopped working out in Guemes Channel but later came on for a few seconds to put me back at Cap Sante. Hasn't worked since. Talked to a couple of local installers, they wanted to sell me a whole new system. Not much help there. I am wading through the manuals now. Will poke around the back of the display unit the next time I can get to the boat. I know that I am an old curmudgeon and anything with a wire is way over my balding head, but I will keep putting my fingers into sockets until something lights up. Keep in touch. --- Cary

I had a similar problem with my Raymarine 125 GPS antenna. It turned out the contacts at the connector to the antenna itself were slightly corroded. Took a few q-tips to clean, and it worked fine. To start troubleshooting, you could first check the status lights on the antenna itself - is it getting power, etc. http://www.raymarine.eu/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=1501

I've also had a lot of success calling the Raymarine service center. They talked me through a number of issues I had with my C-120 - long after warranties expired....

The GPS antenna puck for our E-Series Raymarine died while under warranty. I think the C-Series uses the same thing. They sent a new powered puck. Seems there was a way for water to get inside the original. Since everything else in the system is working, I would be inclined to look at the powered puck first as the source of the problem.

Along with the advice from experienced Ray users (I am not) let me urge you to get a spray can of DeOxit Contact Cleaner (try Amazon). Then unplug each connector one at a time (on all your electronics), use the spray, and plug/unplug the connection a few times to mechanically wipe the contacts.
The old - an ounce of prevention is bigger than a pound of cure.

The Raymarine C125 GPS unit has a battery inside the puck on the circuit board. After a few years the battery dies and can be replaced. It will keep dropping the fix and resetting untile battery is replaced. Gary at Raymarine technical support has an e-article he can send you the link for. I don't have it with me at this time but will add it later. The newer C130 GPS does not use a battery but to interface it with the older chartplotter requires an adapter cable to add NEMA/Seatalk capability to the C series units.
