Hanging Zincs - grounded to a battery neg. terminal

I've just installed a hanging zinc (boatzincs.com) and have it over the side and a line attached to the negative terminal of my battery array with an alligator clip.

My question is this: Will this help protect my drive shaft and rudder assembly.

What is the "hanging zinc" protecting specifically?
