Has anyone had luck selling a Ranger Tug on their own?

Hi cavok, a survey would be nice but personally I wouldn’t spend the money on one. The buyer will more than likely hire their own hull surveyor and an engine surveyor to look the boat over. I would make sure every system is working as it was when the boat was new. If you have a mechanic you trust maybe you could hire them to give all the systems a good once over and if they find anything have them repaired before any sea trials. As far as the bottom paint goes, if it’s in OK condition do a light power wash to get any growth off otherwise I’d spend the money for a fresh coat of bottom paint. While the boat is out of the water have hull waxed and new zinc’s installed and take lots of pictures and keep your receipts to show potential buyers. Remember you need to set your boat apart from all the other Ranger Tugs for sale and a clean and well maintained boat will sell faster. I know it’s hard to invest money into a boat you’re selling but in the end your boat should sell faster than a neglected boat and could save you insurance and storage cost. Good luck!

Tim

Thank you, Boatdreamer, excellent advice. Very helpful. We will make sure to do all that you recommended.

Saw your boat on line and at the Trawler Fest. It’s what I’m looking for but need to sell my R23 first.

Good luck to you, hope you get it sold soon!

Hopefully this is all for naught. The broker has seen enough interest that he thinks it will sell soon, so he's willing to pay for another month up at Anacortes. Apparently this is peak season for selling boats, and if we don't have to pay for moorage, it's better to leave it up there and get more exposure. Thank you to everyone for their helpful advice!

I purchased a 2017 31 sedan earlier this year that I found after posting on the RT 31 Facebook group that I was looking for a boat. I sold our Catalina 36 last fall the same way by posting in a Catalina 36 Facebook group that I was selling. Maybe it’s dumb luck but that worked for me. The other thing was that several brokerage boats were listed at 299,999 and this boat was listed at 240,000 because they weren’t selling through a broker. That’s a lot of cash so we went for the cheaper option. Hope your boat sells soon. I’ve seen it at Cap Sante and it’s a nice boat.

Thank you. These boats are hard to let go, but we’re mostly just using it as a lake boat, and it’s kind of a waste to use it for just that purpose. These boats need to be cruising the San Juans.

If we end up selling it ourselves, I could see dropping the price if we didn’t have to pay a commission. It sounds like you got an incredibly good deal on top of that, too! This seems like a great forum to sell it, as these are the people who are truly interested, and already know what they want.

I sold my 2017 R23 about 3 years ago myself. I put it on Craigslist ans sold it in one week for quite a bit more than I paid for it. We kept it in like new condition and I had ceramic coated it so it looked better than the others on the market. I have detailed boats for other people so they could sell them easier. Presentation is everything when selling a boat or anything in fact. Good luck with your sale. Kevin, Premier custom ceramic coating.

That’s amazing that you sold it in a week! I actually have an estimate from you in my email for the ceramic coating and detail, as those boats look amazing when you’re done with it. We would have gone through with it if we were going to keep the boat, but decided not to put the money into it when the hull still looks good (been on fresh water quite a bit). But I’ve seen your work, and it is very nice!

I sold my 2014 21-EC on my own. A fellow contacted me. I gave him a price. He was here within a week with a bank check. Unfortunately, my sale was just prior to the covid 19 boat value increase. Life goes on.
