hatch question

I was wondering what happens if the hydraulic pump fails (but there is still pressure in the system) with the hatch closed?

is there a way to get into the engine if the hydraulic pump is non operational? I assume (I havent tried) I can't lift the hatch as the strut will fight me in its current position?

I know with mine ( 2011 Ranger Tug ) I can lift it by hand or with the switch. So always accessible. I seem to remember the older ( pre 2011 ) didn't lift manually... But I might be making that up.

I recently winterized our R29S, turned the batteries off and took some fuses out to prevent battery draining while in storage. I had a reason to open the engine hatch, which has hydraulics, and it did open manually. With that said I wonder if by doing so hinders anything for when I re-electrify the boat?

Once you lift it by hand, what holds it open? How hard is it to close again?

As I recall the hatch was heavy to lift and I only opened it enough to inspect something...of which I've forgotten by now. It did not stay in place and it was easy to close back down, again very heavy feeling. At the time I raised the hatch the power had been turned off and the boat hatch unused for 7 days. Not sure if this matters or not. Lenny and Louise, I bet your new R31 is getting lots of head turners on the Columbia River!

As stated above with the hatch closed you can lift it by hand and have someone hold it, tie it off or have a pole holding it open. I like to have someone hold it so it doesn't fall down while you are under the hatch. Once the ram is down and the hatch is shut there is no longer any pressure/fluid in the ram to hold it open or closed. This can be done with or without the batteries on, also it doesn't matter how long the batteries have been off. Our 2009 29 does not have a hatch lift. It's heavy so will likely be a future upgrade. The hatch opens and leans against the stern cabinet, well past vertical and doesn't need to be secured to stay open I did add locking compression latches from Gem to secure the two lockers and engine access.
