We recently purchased a 2018 R-23 and as I have a tendency to do I investigate every nook and cranny I can get into. The boat has the standard Webasto 10,000 Btu/hr AC and I was curious as to how the unit was getting air and where the AC filter was. I installed the AC on my last boat so I knew, like residential AC units, there had to be a filter somewhere. So here is what I found. The previous owner lived in South Florida and used the AC a lot. The unit works well but I was concerned as he didn’t know there was even a filter to inspect. The AC unit is installed under the port forward seat and is easy to get to. There are 2 sets of 2 screws in the fiberglass on the edge of the seat and one long screw on the extreme port edge screwed into some starboard. Once these screws are removed the seat swivels forward quite easily exposing the AC unit. The filter is located next to the cooling coil and just slips out. When I removed the filter I was shocked. The entire filter was covered in mildew, mold, dirt, and just filthy. There was even an empty plastic bag still attached to the unit so I knew the system had never seen service. After removing the plastic bag and the filter I soaked and cleaned the filter with Clorox Clean-Up Cleaner+Bleach for about 15 minutes and all the mold, mildew and crud washed off. So if you have this system it would behoove you to take the time to look into the condition of your filter. Anyone who has any type of respiratory issues surely needs to perform this task.
