OK been reading a few posts on this fun topic...

this post provides some good advice. http://www.tugnuts.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=9441&p=71615&hilit=holding+tank+clean#p71615

practical sailor also shares some good insights on bio enzymes versus chemicals. which I think is the route I will go down.

two questions

1. what is your favorite tank cleaning chemical/enzyme product (suitable for the equipment on the tugs and cutwaters)
2. what is your approach to toilet bowl cleaning and maintenance? what chemicals do you use?

Im in seawater and have historically just flushed with fresh water through the holding tank when I pump out. but I think this year I want to be more aggressive with cleaning the tank.

I also want to keep up treatment in the lines so I can delay changing out the waste lines as they calcify and leak odors..

Since we have a Raritan toilet we figured we’d try their products first, CP for regular cleaning and KO for holding tank. We have been happy with it and have not gone back. We also have a charcoal vent line filter. We follow the Raritan instructions, most notably not to put any other chemicals in the tank to not disturb the happy enzymes. No smells since using this system though I suspect the filter had the biggest impact.

1) I use this and follow the instructions - Odorlos V77012 Holding Tank Treatment - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XXJSCMN/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2) When I pump out I will refill tank with fresh dock water twice and pump that out.

3) Periodically I will fill the toilet full with fresh dock water several times after the tank has been pumped dry to flush the line. On the R-27/OB the line from the toilet to the holding tank is but a foot or two so is easily flushed.

After 7 months of use I sense no odors..... but of course, time will be the proof of my methods.
