Head compartment ventilation

First boat I have owned without an exhaust fan in the head. Not a complaint or really a big deal, but was thinking of adding a small ventilator fan to exhaust moisture after a shower. Vetus makes one that requires a 3” hole and it is only 2.5” tall, easily placed high up on the partition and a small louver could cover the discharge side. That space really steams up and opening the window doesn’t do much to reduce the humidity if it’s 95° and 95% rh outside. At least venting the air into the rest of the cabin would allow the ac to remove it. There are plenty of openings inside the head that air could be drawn in from. My preferred method would be to mount a bilge exhaust fan and use hoses to direct the air overboard. But there is almost no space to make that happen even with just 2” ducting.

Has anyone added ventilation to their head?

I'm not sure if this helps you but I did add an exhaust fan, for the head, on my 34 Cruisers Inc. I cut a 3" hole a few inches behind the window opening, on the side of the upper structure, and used a movable louvered grill, that came with the fan,on the inside with a half clam shell covering on the outside. I ran the wiring, 12v, to a waterproof switch next to the overhead light switch. It worked very well as the clam shell kept sea spray and rain out and the louvered interior vent kept shower water in and , when cold out, could be closed to keep cold air out.
I also installed a small louvered wooden vent, stained to match the door, in the bottom of the head door to provide air flow to the head compartment. There are also some nice stainless and aluminum louvered vents that can be installed through the head door. These would have been easier to use as matching the stain color of the wooden louvered vent to the door was the toughest part of the install.
After installing, my only modification would have been to wire the fan directly to the light switch saving the drilling of another hole in the bathroom wall. They were usually used together anyways.
Unfortunately I don't have any pictures from the install but am planning to do the same thing on my C 28. When I do I'll post some pictures.

Ended up installing a 2” supply line from the ac/heat pump into the head. The outlet is above the commode, with the seat up it diffuses the air very well. Added a pair of 2.5” vent high in the walls as well so the air could get pushed out into the rest of the boat. Works very well to keep the head comfortable all the time and especially after a shower.

And since I was running new air conditioning hose behind the cave walls, I decided to convert the head to fresh water at the same time. So much quieter and clear water in the toilet is so sophisticated. The kit from raritan makes it super easy.

Where did you get your V-berth mattress topper from and at what cost ? Thanks... 🙂

Yacht bedding. They advertise here. Don’t know the cost of just the mattress. Had 6 throw pillows made, got 3 of their standard pillows and had the sheet set & duvet made as well, and a couple blankets in the order. I think was close to 3k for everything. It’s comfortable.
