Well....um...ah! We use two ply and have not had any issues with the tissues. Sorry, I could not help myself. Perhaps the manual is overly cautious or perhaps we are courting disaster. I am anxious to see what others have experienced. Thanks for bringing it up.

We use standard double ply (Costco) toilet paper in our boat without a problem and have been doing this for three and a half years.

We use also use the Costco stuff. We have tried RV toilet tissue, but prefer Costco's product. We understand that IF the toilet tissue states that it is safe for septic systems, it is okay for the holding tanks in our boat and RV. No issues so far in either case.

I read somewhere about the differance and Aparently good RV paper if you put it in a jar of water and shake it up a bit it will disinagrate in a few shakes where as non RV wil not.. I was quite concerned about this in my old boat with the Vacuflush toilet just because it was very stingy on the water it used and also a lot more complicated . The goal is not to cause any blockage going in and coming out of the holding tank So the faster the tissue beaks down the less chance it will cause a problem . So i would say if others are using with out tissue issue will be fine . I am looking forward to upgrading in the spring after reading this post 🙂

We too have always been concerned with using a heavy tissue as a large part of the materials I have read on marine sanitation systems states that, nothing should go into them, that has not been consumed by you first...... However, I have noticed that a number of companies have now come out with a two ply that they claim are safe for these systems. We too will give them a shot.

I agree with Irish Mist. RV/marine toilet paper will breakdown quickly, whereas regular toilet paper may take days (or longer) to breakdown. I just had my septic tank pumped out and the technician said the worst toilet paper to use in a septic tank is Charmin. I use the better quality RV/marine paper in my boat and RV and have not had an issue in either one.

Many RVers we know have been using Angel Soft for years. It is a two ply that breaks down quickly, but is more "home-like" than the RV/marine stuff (and less expensive, too).

Is it truly safe to use two ply or, do we relent to the fact that we are going have to step down to a single ply?

Whaler fan, We never use paper in our head. We place it in a used Walmart sack and drop it off in the nice furnished trash receptacles at the store in Montegue Harbor.

I'd like to add my 2 cents worth to this stinky matter! We've always used marine grade toilet paper because of its ability to break down in the holding tank. Shortly after we purchased our R27 I noticed that Sam's Club (we don't have Costco in Northern Michigan) has a toilet paper sold in bulk that is two-ply called POM. On the box it states it is marine safe, so we use it for home and boat. I just did a sample test of a few sheets that I deposited into a glass of water, let it sit for a few minutes and stirred it up and it all desolves into a nice mush. The good news is that the cost per roll is significantly less then West Marine paper. We've used it for a year now and all is well.

Jim: did you use fresh household water or salt water? I wonder if there's a difference?

I used fresh water from my kitchen sink however we've used the POM paper in both fresh and salt water for the last 14 months so I'd guess my experiment would do the same with a glass of slat water.
