Helm seat flaking

The helm seat cover (vinyl ?) on my 2010 R25 is flaking and breaking up. I suspect the sun is doing it in. Has anyone recovered or replaced this seat? Advice / experience?
 
What year? Mine is a R-27- 2011 and mine is starting to do that. and so is the port front seat. I do not think it is from the sun though.
 
2008 R25 in FL. Helm seat is fine. Boat is always in water
 
I've noticed our helm seat flaking as well. I think it's from sliding on and off the seat while underway to go from sitting to standing position or back.

I'm thinking about taking it to a marine upholsterer and getting a heavier grade fabric put on.
 
I agree with Crewdog regarding helm seat wear. I call the effect "butt wear" caused by sliding off front port edge of the helm seat when dismounting.
 
There is a marine vinyl paint by SEM that will renew look of vinyl. Might be a good alternative if you want to hold off on replacing the vinyl.

I have the 2010 R-25 also. The helm seat is in good shape and there's no sign of "flaking and breaking up". Our boat is kept in water in covered slip all year long. I do place a towel over the seat when leaving it at the dock.

I wonder if obtaining a seat (new or used from the factory) might be a better option than paying for the seat to be recovered. It would be sensible to explore this option by calling the Factory before going down the seat recovering path.

If you do recover the seat you may also want to think about adding additional padding material if you find the current seat too hard... but if you do add padding material the seat may not fold up correctly.

Post back what you decide to do and how much the recovering cost is, if you pursue that option.

Here's some images of the flaking of the chair. The bolster in the V-berth is doing the same thing so sun is probably not the culprit. The boat is stored under cover all summer . . .

I might try the painting route before replacing. Should I sand the flaking down? Any other way to get it to lay flat?
 
Wonder if vinly care products could help prevent the flaking shown?
 
Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas sell many replacement seats. I am pretty sure the factory does not manufacture these seats.
 
And my very low hours seat al so showing the first signs is flaking -aaaaarghhhh. :roll:
 
We had a similar problem on our previous boat from sliding on/off of the helm and navigator's seat. It was quite expensive to have the seats recovered so when we bought the Ranger our first project (or rather my wife's) was to make tight fitting covers for those seats. For those of you who haven't seen a problem yet that might be a good preventive measure and for those with the problem it may be a lot cheaper than new or reupholstered seats.

Has anyone sought input from Ranger Tugs? Seems like premature failure. So far, so good with my boat.

Probably cheaper to buy a repacment seat than reupholster the existing seat.

This is a GOOD point. It seems quality marine grade vinyl seating material should last more than 4-6 years. But that's just me. Sailrite.com has loads of info on marine vinyls and they are supposed to be among the MOST durable fabrics available. Durability figures are expressed in THOUSANDS of hours of weather resistance (NA for INSIDE the pilot house seating) and abrasion resistance ("double rub" ) of over 30,000! That's more "rubs" (sliding into/out of) than a 2008 helmseat with heavy usage would see.

In any case, checking with Ranger Factory to find out WHAT grade/type/brand vinyl was used will guide those replacing what NOT TO GET the next time around.

Mike, Between working for a living, and winter, a couple days a week from ice out until the yacht club invites me to leave in November, is the best I can do for now. The up side is my helm seat will last longer.

4-6 years? I am not at the end of year 3 and I am getting the flaking.
