High output alternator on a D4

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to put say a 200 or 250 Amp alternator on a Volvo Penta D4 engine used in the 29s and 31s. I am exploring adding a bigger battery bank and would like to be able to recharge fairly quickly.

Has anybody done this? So far I haven't been able to find any info on this.

the D4 is a very popular engine, even if its not a ranger there must be another boat out there thats done it. id probably give Balmar or a local marine electrician a call and see if they are experience and recommendations.

Thanks for that link. I have seen that website before. He has a lot of good information.

I spoke to Al at wakespeed and he wasn't sure on the
Volvo question. Recommended that I talk with Rod Collins Compass Marine services. He is out for a couple of weeks. Balmar is on my list as well.


My ultimate goal is to be able to run A/C over night off of battery bank and then be able to charge up fairly quickly. It seems like the technology is getting close if no there yet.

Drive belt capacity may be an issue. You can only transmit so much power through a given belt/pulley setup. Might require replacing all the pump pulleys, crankshaft pulley, tensioner, etc. Complicated.
