Hoisting dinghy to R27 roof racks

Has anyone worked out a clever and satisfactory way to hoist a dinghy (~ 80 pounds) onto the "roof racks" on an R27? My dinghy is wooden, finished bright, and I would like to hoist it into place cleanly rather than push and drag. I realize that using the swim platform or stern davits might be easier, but visiblity toward the stern is already marginal (my opinion), and I don't want to compromise it further. I am hoping for some kind of mast and boom arrangement with block and tackle for mechanical advantage (the arrangement in the R21 Classic comes to mind, but it would have to be located differently to swing the dinghy onto the roof).

All ideas are welcome.

There is a hoist available for your boat, there several in use. Talk to Jeff or John at the factory. We have one on our boat and are very happy.

How about something like this?

That's a Portland Pudgy, about 125# I think. The davit is a Garhauer and the lower section can be made any length to adjust to the height it's gotta be.

If you folks that can't see the images will send me an e-mail, I'll shoot them to you that way. Send me your email address in a PM, don't post it "in the clear" or you'll get spammed!

I'll look into the C-brat image access problem. Sometimes I can see them. Sometimes I can't. And, I'm a registered user. Odd.

Cheers,

Hello John H.

I just saw your post and understand you're after some ideas. I've been where you are...

You can see how we solved the same problem on an R-29 by looking at the picture album I posted last year titled "Roof Mounted Dinghy & Kayak on R29". You'll find it in the owner's Photo Albums under "Circle T". Basically, we use a block and tackle system like you are asking about.

If you're interested in details after you see it, let me know and I'd be happy to share.
Good luck,
Tym

Bruce, I'm looking at that post right now in Firefox(Mozilla), Google Chrome and IE9. It only shows the pix in Chrome, not in the other two, whether I sign in or not. Not sure if that's the cause but it may lead you to a solution (if there is one). Got a request for pix from Suwanee and sent those two and others to him by e-mail, hope he got them, have not heard from him. There are a lot of Garhauer Davits in use on C-Dorys for various things. Mounted at the stern, in the cockpit; forward in the cockpit, and on the cabin sides to get things on the top. I have the pictures if anyone is interested in getting them, shoot me a PM with your email address.

Got the pics

Was driving to Savannah to see mother

Can look but no text

Just got to hotel

Thanks so much for taking the time to send them to me.

Now maybe I'll get the time to study them🙂

Sorry for the picture hassle, folks - good intentions gone awry.

The C-Brats server is configured to disallow hot linking of photos from other web sites - we don't have the bandwidth to allow our gigabytes of pictures to be linked all over the Internet.

However, I do maintain an exception list on the C-Brats server - and add sites as requested. I should have included the TugNuts when I set this place up originally, but didn't think of it at the time.

I've just added the TugNuts site to the exception list, so links to C-Brat pictures should now work here. If you're still seeing the "broken image" icons in your browser for the pics above, or are getting "access forbidden" errors when clicking on text links to these images - refresh your browser, and/or clear your browser cache.
