Has anyone installed a holding tank guage (external) that has worked well for them on an R-27? Thanks

the ge after gauge is a typo

Dennis, you can always hit the 'Edit' button after you post to correct any mistakes (I have to use it all the time 😳 ).

I know you asked about the R27 but I thought you might be interested in a minor problem I have had with the external level sensor on my R29. Crap gets stuck on the inside surface of the tank and causes the high level indicator to stay on when the tank has been pumped out. I have tried adding a bit more flushing water and redoing the pump out and that seems to cure the problem. Holding tanks being what they are seem to present problems for just about every indicator. I have taken to back lighting the tank to visually check the level. I have pretty good access to the forward side of the tank where the level sensors are mounted. There is an earlier discussion on this site about a stuck high level but so far mine has been limited to the mid level sensor. There are some expensive alternatives such as top mounted ultrasonic if you have the space or a side mounted level transducer but both require a level controller module for the set points. Hope this doesn't just add some confusion. The visual solution is reliable if you have easy access. In any event, pump out whenever you can! Pat, Ladybug, Too

Dennis,
We met in New Jersey, hello again. We have a tank monitor but haven't installed it yet, it attaches to the outside of the tank. I don't have the name with me and we are in the San Juan Islands. Capt. Mac recommended it so it should work, e-mail him and I'm sure he will give you the name.

A few squirts of dawn liquid kitchen soap added to our toilet after we've had a pump out and added holding tank chemicals and a gallon of water has helped our holding tank from getting gunked up. On a prior boat that we followed this procedure on we never had a sending unit stick in place so for Ladybug and anyone who installs a mechanical sending unit in the holding tank this may be helpful.

Jim,
I would recommend using Joy instead of Dawn for use with salt water. Joy works good with salt water. Dawn gunks up with salt water. Dawn works well in an RV where fresh water is used.

First.... I converted our R25's manual head to an electric operated head and reworked the plumbing so that water from the fresh water 30 gal tank is used for flushing. I simply tapped into the plumbing line to the small sink in the shower room. We use bottled water for drinking.

When I pump out I always make sure the tank is full by filling the holding tank before pumping out. Then I pump all this out and then refill the holding tank as a back flush method, and again pump this out... and if I have the time I do this once again. This technique has kept my holding tank clean as inspected visually from the outside.

I've also marked my holding tank on the outside with 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 full lines. These lines are visible from the engine bay.

I just installed the Acu-Gage RV & Marine Holding Tank Monitoring System on our R25 on both the fresh water and holding tank (it supports up to 4 tanks). Installation was extremely simple. It is the older version of a monitor now sold by Tech-Edge http://tankedge.com/products.html but I got it dirt cheap in the West Marine clearance section. Anyway, for the fresh water tank it works perfectly. I don't see having an issue with the holding tank either because the monitoring strips go down the entire height of the outside of the tank and there are two of them. I don't see a little gunk effecting them. I will still have to let you know since we haven't filled the tank yet. It will probably happen this weekend when we have our first overnight of the season.

Anyway, it was easy to do and looks like it will work for a very long time without issues. I don't think there are any real differences in holding/water tank layouts between the R25 and R27.

Doug:

How is the TankEdge product working for you?

I'm thinking of installing the Smart Mini model for my R-25's holding tank as I'm told it will be nigh impossible to visually check the level from the engine bay after a few more years. So far after 3 and a bit years I can clearly see the level and my electric powered head uses fresh water only.

Thanks... Barry
