Hello,

I am a newbie to your forum but hope to become a contributing member over time. We have a contract on a 2019 Ranger Tug R-29 CB. The survey is schedule for Monday 12/16. If all goes as planned we hope to bring the boat home to Stuart, FL by the end of December. Our plan is to enjoy the wide variety of inland and near coastal waters that the southeast has to offer then after a few years perhaps tackle the loop.

We have a qualified surveyor and someone that I feel will do a thorough job of the inspection. However, based on the experiences and lessons learned from current Ranger Tug owners are there any recommendations as to items unique to Ranger Tugs that we should look for during the survey and sea trial?

Thank you

Welcome to the group!

We bought a 2014 R30S last April and had a comprehensive survey and sea trial done here in the Seattle area. A good place to start might be with looking at another surveyor’s work. If you’d like, I can send you a copy of what we had. It was 42 pages long with a ton of photos. The boat surveyed great. He also included some safety advice and items that would bring it us to the latest standards. Your boat may be a bit new to pull meaningful samples, but I’d suggest having that done anyway to create a baseline for future oil analysis as the engine ages.

Let me know if you’d like to see the survey.

Haifisch,

Reading through your survey prior to attending mine next week would be educational. I’ll take you up on that offer and PM you my email address so that you can send it to me. In regard to the oil sample the surveyor offered it but suggested that we do not do it. He stated that because the engine has only 32 hours on it the sample would certainly show metals shavings from the break in cycle. Since there is a 5 year transferable engine warranty I felt comfortable with his advice. Do you think I should reconsider my position?

I emailed you the survey. I don't have much advice on the oil sample. That is a very low number of hours. They are not terribly expensive to have done. Good luck!

A survey is money well ie spent!! It saved us so much aggravation down the road by having the items resolved before delivery, rather then discovered in use!

Also consider drawing and analyzing a transmission oil sample. The latest Volvo D4-300 service protocol says trans oil and filter should be replaced after 25 hours! They must have had some issues that led to this recommendation.
