On my Ranger 31 the hot water heater is electric and powered by AC. So at anchor or a mooring we will run the generator for hot water. When we spend the day underway, it would be nice if the water were heated by the engine as well, as it was on our last boat. I have gotten different answers from different folks and would prefer the "yes", but hope that can be confirmed as correct. Anyone know the facts?

I can confirm that the hot water tank is heated by the engine on my 2016 R31.

On my C30 it is heated by both AC power and from engine heat. If you take a look at your hot water heater you should see hoses that run from your engine to the heater and back(mine are black about 1 inch thick). Careful though, when I run my engine the water gets very hot. Someone else can probably opine on this better, but if I needed water on the hook I would run my engine before I ran my generator.

On my 2014 R31S, the water heat is heated by either AC electric or heat from the Volvo D4-300 engine fresh-water coolant system. Open the hatch inside the cabin in front of the stove. On the starboard side in that hatch area, you should see the water heater. Take a look at the hoses into and out of it. They should lead back to the engine coolant system.

Our 31 heats both with electric or engine heat. Usually lasts 2 days from running engine. Make sure the 2 shutoff valves on front of engine are open. Same water heats the heater.

To keep the water temperature the same whether heated by the electric element or engine heat we have a temperature regulated mixing valve attached to the outlet of the water heater. Otherwise, as another poster commented, the water will be much hotter after running the engine than it is after sitting at the dock on shore power. Could cause an unpleasant surprise when taking a shower .
The mixing valve is available at most hardware or plumbing supply stores.

I am having trouble commissioning my on board water which obviously includes the hot water tank. I traced the inlet (cold) water hose back and swear that the cold inlet comes from the same raw water intake that the head uses for water! I am a new owner of a 2009 R25 and in the process of commissioning all systems.

Either I am off my rocker or this plumbing is totally not right. Might add that I am not getting water to the heater from the water pump either. Hummmmmm

I added the tempering valve to the hot water heater or our R25 so the temperature is the same on the engine heat as on electric heat.

I understand the tempering valves are required on all hot water heater's now. So you may already have one installed on your boat.
