Subject: I wish it was easier to identify the RT OB models

This issue continues to confound me as I pass by one of the RT OB models, especially the R23/OB, and R25/OB models. The R27/OB model is a bit easier as it so much longer/bigger.

To determine if one I see is a R23/OB or a R25/OB I typical try to get my eye on the HP rating of the Yamaha motor: 200 for the R23/OB, and 250 for the R25/OB.... and off course the 300 for the R27/OB.

Is there an easier/alternative way to distinguish the difference between the R23/OB and the R25/OB ?

The RT25 has the swim step that wraps around the outboard. The RT23 has the outboard hanging off the back of the transom.

The RT25 and RT23 have 1" stainless rails on the sides around the cockpit. The RT27-OB does not have any rails around the cockpit.

The R25/OB has changed somewhat since its initial introduction, especially where the engine/transom is. Thus there are older style and newer style R25/OB models.

Yes, I acknowledge the R27/OB model has no cockpit side rails, and when I asked Jeff Messmer about this, he simply smiled at me. I suspect the reason is that the cockpit floor is lower down than on other RT models and the rules allow the side rails not be required. 🙂

I just yell out "HEY, IS THAT AN R23??"

That doesn't produce any expected result if no-one is onboard, now does it, and if it's an R27/OB the reaction could be unwelcome? Let's be more constructive here... yea, I know you're joking about. 🙂

The swim step hand rails on the R23 run parallel with the back of the swim step (in the same plane as the width of the boat) but on the R25, they run parallel with the sides of the swim step (in the same plane as the length of the boat). If you are close enough to see the markings on the engine cowl, you should be able to spot these railings.

Also, (at least on the models I have seen), the R25 has the two black 'cave windows' in the painted part of the hull, similar to the R27 (the R23 does not). From the front, the R25's windlass is closer to the front, nearly touching the anchor shaft and the larger bow roller - on the R23, the windlass is back more so there is more chain showing and the bow roller is small (on stock boats).

Yeah, baz... I was joking. Of course. [Mods... please let me know if the occasional joke (in good taste) is not welcome? I'm fine with that, as I know jokes are only funny in the 'ear of the beholder'. 😀 ]

To be more constructive, I'll mention (at least on my boat), the swimstep rails are an option, so they may not be there. But good to know the difference between the 23 and 25. Didn't realize that...

Since the 23 and 27 don't have the OB set into the swim deck, the best ID for me is the cockpit canvas. The shortie cantilevered on the 23 and longer canvas with rear supports on the 27.

Barry, another way to tell the current R23OB from the R25OB is that where the 25 colored side hull ends it marries up to an extended and curved part of the transom. From the side of the boat you see both the colored part of the hull and the white transom but on the 23 all you see is the colored part of the hull as there is no curved extended part for the transom.

Most certainly, joking is allowed in good taste, and your posting was absolutely OK IMO. Cheers. 🙂

It's not common, but they are out there. I know of at least one. 🙂
An RT27-OB with the bimini from the R23. (It's called the Ball Cap on the RT27-OB).

That is how we have our 27OB configure. Makes for nothing getting in the way when fishing.

Correction. I know of TWO boats with the ball cap that are RT27-OB's. 🙂

The R27/OB model is easily recognized by several unique features, such as:

1) no cockpit side rails
2) lounge seat on bow
3) 300 HP motor
4) Normally a much larger/longer canvas Bimini with two rear SS support poles
5) No port-side safety rail on the swim/engine platform if kicker motor installed
