We bought a small Emerson portable ice maker that is small and inexpensive. It is not for "underway" but we have been surprised by its performance. We do use distilled water at $1.00 per gallon so we are paying a bit for the convenience. It makes threes sizes and if you turn it off it melts back into the supply tank and is reused to make ice when you turn it back on. Since we keep distilled water for the batteries, we just added a few more jugs. It isn't a big time ice maker but it sure is convenient and doesn't take up much space. It is 120 VAC so you need shore power or the gen set running. Carolyn spotted it on sale at Target for $120. Great First Mate.

My wife got one of those for use in our 5th wheel camper. Actually, we put it on a TV tray outside under the awning and plugged it in to the camper. We took 6 grand kids camping this summer and went through a bunch of Cool Aid and such. The ice maker was able to make enough ice to keep up with the demand. Over a period of time it will pay for itself compared to driving to the store and buying bags of ice. That is what we did last year and it was a pain to have to go to the store everyday for a bag of ice.
