I'm trying to figure out how to mount my outboard to the swim step rail. Factory recommended the sea dog mount as its only a 2.5 hp suzuki and they claim they use this one all the time. Yet it's supposed to mount over the vertical post. How is that supposed to work with such a bend?

If I don't mount over the vertical post then it rotates as only friction is keeping it upright. Not good.

There are 4 holes in the mount. How about lashing the bottom two to the vertical posts to stop it from spinning? Other ideas?

I'm on a short timeframe to get this fixed so any hacks are good ideas !

So lashing did work. New photos added. Now I'm not convinced by the strength of the swim rail ! There's a lot of wobble!

My rail forms a very shallow angle so there isn't much lateral support compared to what looks like a larger l shape on the ranger tug 31 next to me in the marina.

From what I've seen, if you opt to mount on the swim rail, you need to add a vertical leg down the middle where you show the mount with the straps. That provides the downward strength as well as preventing the pivot.

The second piece is a horizontal bar that attaches to the top rail and back of the boat to provide the extra support to prevent the vertical rails from moving in/out.

Thanks for Sharing! I just bought a Suzuki 2.5 for the dinghy on my R27 and was trying to figure out how to stow it.

I don't have rails on my swim platform and mounted my kicker on the stern port side cockpit rails. Seems like it is more stable than the swim rails and no issues of the sway you have.

Navigators Son is correct. You need to add a vertical post and a stabilizer connection back to the boat. See the photo below.

my original understanding was that for a 2.5 you didnt need the brace. now im not convinced. the factory is kindly in contact and helping me figure this out

Knotflying do you have a photo? did you mount a single board to the stern rail? how did you get enough offset for the shaft to clear the hull if so? my rails are set in about 4 inches and I think it would need an offset to clear.

I recommend you mount a bracket on the rear of the cockpit coming immediately forward of your swim rail location. On our boat I bring the dinghy alongside the port side of the swim platform and secure it and then it is easy to lift the outboard from the dinghy to the cockpit mount. Ours has a thick thermoplastic pad to clamp the outboard to that is vertical behind the cockpit rail. The bracket is bolted vertically onto the top of the cockpit combing under the rail.

I don't know how to post pictures from my PC, but here's a generic picture (google searched Cutwater 28 / images)

That's odd - I guess the link I copied from a still picture is actually a link to a video - just run the video and pause it at the beginning to see the pad attached to the deck rail

If your outboard is similar to the Yamaha I have (2.5 hp), you have a section where you can raise/pivot the outdrive. On my R25, it provides just enough clearance to not hit the rub rail.

just chatted with the factory. they had the other idea of putting it on the stern rail as in that video. unfortunately my bimini frame mounts to the stern rail just above the t section where the pad is installed on the Port side. :-( so no go again. interesting in that video the swim rail definitely looks different to mine with more forward sweep at the edges.

I think my only option is to screw into the coving just below the stern rail with one of these

I will need a starboard backing plate and the scariness of drilling holes into the boat :-(

anybody installed on of these?

BTW the brace from the swim rail to the stern rail comes off with a quick release pin on both ends. Once the dingy is down and the motor is on the dinghy I remove the brace so it doesn't block access off that end of the swim step. The additional vertical post was an easy add. RT pre cut the tubing and shipped all the parts to me for installation. This layout allows the stern rail to be used for the grill.

Got a solution. I have managed to flex the Bimini frame a little and move the mount point down by 1 1/2 inches. The engine fits on the mount on the stern rail. Just. I'm glad the engine is very slim. I don't think the Yamaha would fit. I think I still need to play with this some more and take it for a test drive. Thanks for the suggestions so far! There is surprising little room to mount one on the stern!

I actually made my mount and it clamps on the rail and extends all the way down to over the rub rail. I removed the screw on the rub rail and then reinstalled the screw through the mount back into the rub rail. This way the engine shaft rests on the bracket all the way down and no damage from rubbing occurs to the hull. I'll see if I can find a picture.
Actually, if you click on my blog link you can see the setup on the master banner photo.

thats a tidy solution Barry

a friend of mine has a custom CNC company. thinking of spinning up a side business in custom shaped mounts for boats! the available solutions on the market are expensive and limited!
