Import duty

I understand that there is now a 10% import duty on any USA vessel being imported to Canada. That sucks IMO. With NAFTA2.0 coming, will that change I wonder. Better or worse? Exploring Ranger Tugs for sale and that 10% is quite the hit. Liking some of the USA registered Tugs and wondering if that duty is actually in place and if there is any resolution anticipated. Appreciate any info on this.

Call Ranger Tugs office for details about any tariffs is my advice. They are likely to know about these details.

Suggest you contact a customs broker for advice. If you are going to import a boat from USA to Canada or vice versa you will eventually determine you need one.

Having recently purchased a 2012 R29 in Canada, ( August 2018) we did not use an customs broker. Our experience was to contact our local U.S. Customs and Border Patrol office and ask how to go about it. We are in Buffalo, however the Customs Officer who had all the knowledge was located in Niagara Falls ( about 25 miles from Buffalo). They were very helpful once I was able to speak to the right person. We ended up corresponding via email so I eventually had record of all the supporting documentation as to what was necessary for importation. As I understand it, the is no import duty as long as the vessel was made in the USA and is being imported for personal use.

Documents you’ll need:

Certification Of Origin for the Vessel and the Builders Certificate. (Available from Ranger Tug)
Form CBP 7501. ( which was filled out by CBP at the border)

The original poster is talking about importing a boat into Canada. US Customs will not be much help, nor will a broker in the US.
You will need to contact Canadian Customs for current tariff information.

You'll also need to factor in the exchange rate. I would suggest contacting Port Boathouse. I purchased an R27 and later a C30 through them, both originating in the US. For the C30 the exchange rate was fairly close at that time and it was waived. This was pre import duty. My experiences with them have been good in terms of the sale and after service.

I can vouch for Port Boathouse (PBH) as well, they have an excellent knowledgeable staff and are the largest dealer for Ranger Tugs. They have an excellent inventory (new and used) and if they don't have what you are looking for they will actively help you find it.

We purchased a used R-21EC from them last year and Dave Turner from PBH had spent a long time finding the perfect Tug for us. We had looked at a lot of Tugs in the US but transport costs, Customs/Import fees along with the exchange rate made getting one that was already in Canada much more affordable.

Highly recommend you give PBH a call! When you call ask for Dave Turner and he will help you out!

Just to be clear, the 10% tariff on boats imported to Canada is a retaliatory tariff in response to US steel and aluminum tariffs. It is more or less independent of the new NAFTA 2.0 agreement, so it is not clear how long it will last. BTW I imported a Cutwater 28 from the US to Canada in early 2017, before the tariff, and did not use a Customs Broker, just arrived at the border with the boat and documentation. No problem. You will pay sales tax + the tariff at the moment, so close to 25% in total taxes.
