I am impressed with the quality of stainless work that Bolton in Canada has done on Ranger Tugs railing and masts. However, I have always felt a little uncomfortable with the mast gaff arm sticking up and forward when the mast is folded. It is hard to judge its clearance when squeezing under low bridges and makes covering the boat with a tarp more problematic. I have found one solution to this issue short of removing the mast. The result gains 18” or more in clearance when the mast is folded.
I cut the gaff arm and installed a hinged fitting that is locked in place by set screws and uses a pin to lock the hinge in the open (normal) position with the mast up. This was a simple install and hopefully will benefit our boating experience in the ways noted.
I’ve loaded photos of the modification in my photo gallery. Several manufactures make the hinged fitting, be sure and get the 1” size and one that has the pin lock.
