I am impressed with the quality of stainless work that Bolton in Canada has done on Ranger Tugs railing and masts. However, I have always felt a little uncomfortable with the mast gaff arm sticking up and forward when the mast is folded. It is hard to judge its clearance when squeezing under low bridges and makes covering the boat with a tarp more problematic. I have found one solution to this issue short of removing the mast. The result gains 18” or more in clearance when the mast is folded.

I cut the gaff arm and installed a hinged fitting that is locked in place by set screws and uses a pin to lock the hinge in the open (normal) position with the mast up. This was a simple install and hopefully will benefit our boating experience in the ways noted.

I’ve loaded photos of the modification in my photo gallery. Several manufactures make the hinged fitting, be sure and get the 1” size and one that has the pin lock.

Here’s one source on Amazon:

This is awesome; thanks for sharing! Say, when i was checking your albums I saw one on an emergency starter switch, and a 2nd bilge pump. I know the reason for the 2nd bilge pump, but have some questions as to how you pulled it off. I may ask you a few questions at some point. I’m not sure why you’d need an emergency start switch. Can you tell me why? I’m on week 2 as an 21ec owner.

Thanks!

Tyler, happy to help as we all learn more about these wonderful boats.
RE, your question on the emergency start switch, rather than hijack this folding mast topic I will refer you to this link:

Your engine is probably not a Volvo Penta but I see reference to backup ways of starting diesel engines in all sorts of boats. Some just carry an automotive push button remote start switch with alligator clips instead.
