Just bought a tug and would like advice on where to get cruising guides, tide charts, and ( yes I know redundant) mooring information. My initial start will be port alberni to learn the boat but would like your input as I branch further out on the west coast of Vancouver island and eventually to the inside passage. Also any advice on upgrading the boat for this. It’s a 2011 R29 classic. Well kept but any advice on what’s really needed is appreciated.

Waggoners Cruising Guide as a resource. San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands, Desolation Sound to scratch the surface. This is a nice help: https://www.nwcruising.net/

Here a good place to start.

Another form Waggoner, but I also like Salish Sea Pilot. Its a digital guide, works great on the iPad. Good BC content, including west coast of Vancouver Island. Dreamspeaker guides often have better anchoring information. Waggoner also offers Ports and Passes, which provides tide and current info, though I've always just looked at the government sources.

Welcome to the Revolution! R29 Classics Rock!

We bought all the Dreamspeaker Sailing and Cruising Guides for BC. Has great information on BC waterways, best anchoring locations, how to enter tight spots, marina locations and some history of the area. There are four books published.

New and wanting to learn the boat on the West Side of Vancouver Island in the middle of winter? Sounds to me like being new to mountain climbing and taking first lessons on Mt Everest or K2.
I’d recommend getting the boat moved to Nanaimo or other close by marina on the East Side of Vancouver Island and start your R29 familiarizations from there.
