My wife and I are considering an R 29 pretty seriously....looked at one but haven't spent any time on the water or overnight. We disagree on something and perhaps all of you with experience can help us out. When two couples are sleeping on the boat, where does couple #2 prefer to sleep: the midcabin berth (below) or in the main cabin?

My wife claims no one can get in or out of the midcabin berth, and I claim that it's comfortable and more private, and anyway I'd rather have the other couple down there for my own peace and quiet!

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Remember when you were a kid and your Momma said, "My house, my rules." 😉 You buy the boat, you decide where everyone sleeps. The most important part is: you get the most comfortable berth!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

PS MANY people buy a boat based on thinking others will want to cruise with them. Rarely happens... especially on a boat with only one head. Just because a boat CAN sleep more than a couple, doesn't mean that you will... or should.

JamesTXSD and knotflying, I so agree with you both! 😉

We were always advised that a good rule-of-thumb for most boats between 25 and 30 ft is... they can comfortably sleep either 6 drunk, or 3 sober.

Specific to the question, everyone who has cruised with us prefers the 1/4 berth. On one occasion, the couple had doubts about being able to "fit". They ended up requesting that we stay on the boat longer. They found the 1/4 berth to be comfortable, private and relaxing.
The single bathroom on the boat is easily shared when you use the curtain in the forward berth.
