Karma has been secured to the dock now for three months with a For Sale sign hanging on her stern. While she has been well maintained being washed and cleaned weekly, she still felt neglected. So, this weekend we decided it was time to get away from the new house in Castle Pines Co. and give Karma a weekend out on the water. We caught an early flight from Denver to Oakland on Saturday morning.
Arriving in Oakland, we found the weather just a bit overcast but not detrimental to cruising on the bay (after all, we spent a just over a year in the PNW where this type of weather was the norm). Maureen's Aunt and Uncle planned to join us for our cruise on Saturday. While I ready Karma for her day cruise, Maureen ran over to the supermarket to pick up drinks and snacks. Once she returned we just had to await the arrival of her Aunt and Uncle.
Once they arrived, we headed out of the marina and in to the Oakland Inner Harbor and then out into the Bay. As we crossed under the Oakland Bay Bridge the wind and chop started to build. As Maureen's Aunt and Uncle are not boaters, we made the decision to turn around and just cruise the estuary. They were amazed to see their city from a totally different perspective. Having lived in the bay area all of their lives and never being out on the water, they were amazed at all that their city had to offer.
After cruising for three hours we headed back to the marina and put Karma to bed for the evening. We enjoyed dinner at a nice restaurant overlooking a marina. Not only did we have a great view of a marina full of Nordic Tugs, but right in the front row was an R-29! It seemed that every marina we passed by, there was at least one Ranger Tug moored. Patty and her group have sure been busy selling boats in the Bay Area!
Sunday morning we awoke to weather that was totally Seattle weather. A light drizzle was falling along with a light fog obscuring the view across the bay. Buttttttt, being as we did spend a lot of time in this type of weather, it did not stop us from going out. Just as we cleared the marina, the sun started to show through. By the time we got into the bay, the sun was out giving us an incredible view of the Golden Gate! We cruised out to Alcatraz and then over to Angel Island. We made a loop around Angel Island and then headed over to the city. Cruising the San Francisco water front in your own boat is a great experience.
While Puget sound does have its share of marine traffic, the bay offers a considerable amount more. We had to make way to freighters and tankers headed in and out of the bay.
We made our way back into the estuary and then back to the marina. We put Karma back in her spot, cleaned her up and headed off for Easter dinner.
What a great way to spend your Easter weekend. Out cruising on an incredible body of water aboard a great vessel with those you love!
If Karma does not sell in the next four weeks (the remainder of her listing), we will be taking her off of the market. We are putting together plans for a cruise up the the Sacramento Delta where we will keep her for a while. While the plans are not firm yet (since we don't know if we will have a boat or not), we do already have one other Ranger Tug that is planning to make the trip with us. In the event Karma sells, the plan just moves north to Lake Shasta where we already have a reservation on a houseboat. We will know if in fact we will cruising the bay or delta in the next couple of weeks. At that time we will post again in the event other would like to join us on the bay. The planned dates are; depart Alameda on June 10th. Complete the cruise in Isleton on June 19th at Ox Bow Marina.
