If anyone on the forum uses the Kirkland (Costco) Heavy Duty Diesel 15-40 diesel oil, there is a nice deal on it right now. Online, delivered, it's $31.99 for 3 gallons ($8 off). Meets Volvo VDS 4.5 spec. Has a good reputation on BITOG forum (where oil is religion). Blackstone-Labs tells me I'll find it comparable to DELO 400. I may switch over on my next oil change. Anyone using it now or who might want to switch, sale's on through 1/29/23.

thanks for sharing the deal! My mechanic (all the big item maintenance I can't do) told me he would personally shoot me if I used anything but DELO400 when I do my oil changes. Your research does make me wonder though... 🙂

Thanks Gini!
Bought 6 gallons for an oil change planned for this spring. Have trusted Blackstone-Labs with all things oil for 15+ years now so if they give it a thumbs up it’s “good to go” in my book.

We all have our oil brand and product manufacture choices. Which one is the best? For me I picked mine many years ago and have always used the same brand. I have never had an issue with them and always used the same brand for servicing my engine or customers engines. Are my choices the best ? I don't know! I do know I have not had a engine failure do to lubrication. I always used Pennzoil for my gas automotive engines, boat 30W, truck and car 5W30, Mercury/Quicksilver 2 stroke oil in all my 2 stroke engines, Valvoline transmission fluid ATF, and Diesel engine maintenance I used some form of Shell Rotella T3 and now the synthetic blend T4. I have not used full synthetic with my boat engines because I change the oil in a frequency that would not warrant the use of full synthetic. I no longer use Pennzoil in my car or truck only because the GM requirement is to use Dexos oil which is synthetic and my oil changes are less frequent. My car or truck are not under the same loads as boat engines.

So, where I'm I going with this? I am a user of Pennzoil, Mercury/Quicksilver 2 stoke oil, Valvoline ATF, Shell Rotella and Dexos. I have never changed and have never had a reason to change until about a year ago. Shell Rotella T4 was hard to find. The shelves were always empty. When I did find a gallon I would purchases it for the future. I do go to Costco from time to time and would see pallets of Kirkland Diesel oil available at a decent price. This made me do some research as to who makes the oil and is it any good. There is plenty of information about the company that blends the oil.Warren Distribution that makes and labels, oil for many products, Kirkland being one of them, Carquest, Meijer and AmazonBasic oils , Walmart to name a few more. From all information that I read it is a good product that meets or exceeds most engine manufactures. They also make their own brand too.

Blackstone-Labs tells me I'll find it comparable to DELO 400. I guess Blackstone would know because they test oil but wouldn't it be comparable to any oil brand with the same qualifications. The test Results and PQIA Assessment of Delo 400 and Rotella T4 are the same and I would assume the Kirkland oil would have the same results. My point is Kirkland oil is not Delo 400 but it will do the same thing. Lubricate the engine. And should be just as good. If you don't have a brand choice and you are comfortable with changing to Kirkland oil. I would not hesitate to purchase it. For me, old school thinking, I will stay with what I have used in the past. I will agree, those prices you posted are great. I paid about 17.00 a gallon and at 2.5 gallons of oil per engine X 2 the Kirkland oil would be a big savings.

Dave - Delo 400 seems to be rock solid stuff. I respect a mechanic who sticks with what they know is great and predictable. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

Al - I’m with you. I’m going to make the change.

Brian - Always love your posts. I get the value of brand loyalty when you know you have a company that makes a top product and is committed to it. Can’t and wouldn’t argue with that. Yes, I learned on the BITGO forum (Boy Is The Oil Guy, for anyone unfamiliar with it — and ya’ gotta love it) that Warren makes the oil. Seems to be a well-repeated company on BITCO. What caught my attention was one poster who had moved from DELO to Kirkland and started getting better oil analyses. Just one experience, for sure. But I’m drawn to the science of oil analysis and love my Blackstone reports. Plus, after 30 plus years of trying to figure out the best oil for my cars (synthetic, semisynthetic, Dino, this brand or that), I have come down on the side of thinking that the reputable products are all good. I’ve sold and traded my cars before I came close to exhausting their useful life spans, so if I increased their life span with my diligent oil selections, someone else benefited from that. And at this stage in my life, most of my favorite toys, including my current cars and my boat, are likely to be around after I am. So my goal now is modest: Take really good care of them while I have them. And I’m all in for saving a few bucks. Every boat buck I save, I put back into the boat. So it’s all good.

A good thread. I’m enjoying the exchange. And I agree totally with everything everyone has said.

I think oil is based more on marketing than anything else. The weight and API information is what matters to me. Has anyone ever asked a mechanic as to why they say X is better than Y? I have used several different brands of oil in my driving life and have never had an engine failure related to an oil brand. I tend to do my own service and keep my boats and vehicles for many years. Granted I stick with Mobil -1 or Rotella, but have over time used everything from Sears to Amsoil and never had an oil related issue. IMO, go with specs and change oil and filter regularly and you can't go wrong.

I think we're all circling around the same point. But Knotflying, I think you nailed it!
