Yikes, All I need to do is read the instructions.
And this has probably been posted before.

I've done about 4 oil changes on my Yanmar 4BY2. Not a big job, just a little messy sometimes. (I'm the one that gets messy.... I sacrifice myself to keep the boat clean.)

Back to the subject. On my first oil change, all went well. I had read about the three o-rings and made sure they were all there and in good shape. HOWEVER, I took the boat out for a quick spin and got about a hundred yards from the dock and went back to look. Oil was spraying all over the place ! I did a quick turn around and got to the dock without the bilge pump running. Phew. The oil was coming from under the filter cap. The top o-ring had blown out. I cleaned it all up and installed a new ring AND I looked up the proper torque. Over the next three oil changes everything went well. (I wrote "19 ft-lbs" down on the engine cover with a paint type marker.)

Today I was changing the filter. I was rolling the o-ring into what I thought was the right place (all the way up under the top rim). On the way to the top rim, the ring fell very nicely into a groove about 3/8" away from the top rim. Hmmm. I started thinking. I looked in the manual and sure enough the photo shows this groove to be the correct location. It looks like a much more secure place.

Screen shot from the Owners Manual in my album, page 4.
We learn as we go.
Thanks for listening.
