Got the boat last year, can’t find the depth sounder! Where is it located? In our 27 it was easy to find and simply required topping out with some antifreeze for the medium, is the R29 the same? Thanks!

It is below the aft thruster motor.

In my 2019 R29 CB this is how I would access the area where the rear thruster motor is located. Flip the rear transom seat so that it faces aft. Standing in the cockpit and on the engine hatch, lift up the aft deck hatch that sits over the generator and set it to the side. Look aft of the generator and you will see the rear thruster motor mounted to the stern, slightly to the port if I remember correctly. I cannot attest to the location of the transducer under it as I have not looked for mine yet. I have been wondering where it was so later today I'm going to look for it.

Be aware that RT has the habit of changing where they place the depth sounder in their boats.

In my 2019 R29 CB they had moved it from somewhere aft where it had been previously located on earlier models, to a location on the hull below and slightly fwd and inboard of where the the starboard battery is located. There's a two-circular cutout in the flooring just aft of the toilet's raw water pump that allows access to the depth finder. It can also be seen by placing your head inside the two hatch locker in fwd starboard side cockpit corner and peering straight down through the flooring round cutout (this hatch also can contain the cockpit steering mechanism). IMO the access is problematic even though it can be viewed in this manner.

N.B. I've had to carefully place a rag stuffed into the floor cutout for fear of things falling down the cutout and becoming out of reach, or simply lost for ever.

I'll post a picture to make it clear where the access to the depth finder can be found. I was at factory as they were building my boat so took many photos to record for future use. 😀

Hello,

If you are having trouble finding this please email me direct, my email is below in my signature. As stated above we have changed the location of the transducer in the past few years in different spots.

Thank you,
Kevin Lamont

You are a lifesaver. I will check that location on the boat next time I am on it. If you have any of those other photos you’re willing to share, I would greatly appreciate it! Again, thanks so much.

Kevin- this would be one of those items that would be great to have on the diagram for the boat and in the manual, especially if it needs regular servicing (antifreeze) to operate correctly.

Thank you for these photos! It was really helpful in finding the depth sounder which (for us) is on the starboard side after under one of the lockers. A tight fit! And not much room to maneuver, but the sounder works perfectly now. Thanks again.

You are most welcomed. Glad to help a fella RT R29/CB owner. 😀

I just purchased a 2019 RT 29S and my depth sounder isn't working. Talked to Garmin to go thru reset process, etc. and still not working. I did find the Garmin transducer and it's 30" away from the stb opening behind aft steering hoses and water pump. What a mess to get to! Anyway, no way I can get in there except reaching with my cell phone to take a picture. Is there another way in? I can't seem to find any access panels anywhere.
Has anyone installed another Garmin transducer, likely a thru hull this time, in a better location?

Thanks

Make sure the gain is set to “Auto”.

On one trip recently summer for the first time I found our depth sounder not working. Fearing the worst I checked the transducer and all the connections. I could find nothing wrong. I then went through all the different sonar screens and noticed the gain was set to 600. I changed it back to “Auto” and it worked perfectly as before. I have no clue how it got changed. Perhaps a power glitch as I never change it.

Something worth checking.

Barry,

Thanks so much for posting this archive. My new R29CB will be going into production soon for December completion. I’m in Alaska and probably won’t make it down during construction and had wanted to take some pics just like this. Your other posts on purchasing and outfitting your boat have been very helpful to me.

Like you, I am adding a second chart plotter. Most of the boats I’ve seen with this have put autopilot and engine screen between the two plotters. I see you put your plotters together with the smaller screens to the lift. How do you like this layout? Did you get a say in this from the factory.

Any changes you’d make if you had it do over again?
