Hi,
Anyone seen this condition where the generator starts fine but only to 1/2 throttle. Then smokes (maybe electrical) then shuts down code -83. Total run time maybe 20 seconds. Filter, fuel good. I'd like to inspect the capacitor but the generator is installed to close to the exhaust assembly and I cannot get a right angled bit to take out the screws holding the panel at this time. Only 59 hours and it's giving me trouble. Was hoping to get a lot more life out of thus . Looks like the whole generator will have to be moved for access.

Gotta be a pain in the nether region - you have my sympathy
Let me say from a lifetime of wrenching on mechanical critters that you are best off doing two things.
Get help from a dealer that has actually worked on the Maase (call the factory)
And if there is no simple cure, pull it right out of the hull so you/they can get at it - which will save you time and money in the long run

Hi Stuart:

Check with Peter at WIYY. He had to change my capacitor, so he knows how to get in there. Although, I do believe he may have had to yank it out to work on it.

Still in the early stages. Spoke to the Mase factory and also to Cutwater. was I out there saturday to look at the capacitor. It is too bad they put the generator as close to the wet exhaust as they did. I cannot even fit in a bit alone never mind a socket wrench to turn it. I wouldn't have room to back out the screw. I know the unit is going to have to come out to get this fixed. I'll post results after I get this running.
Thanks,
Stuart

Stuart,

Our Mase 4.0 went out on E83 and when I checked it out the shaft seal had failed on the raw water pump which atomized salt air throughout the unit. Had to pull it. I had already changed the wet exhaust and modified the fuel transfer pump mounting board so it could be removed. Still, it took two hours to cut everything loose and the help of my nephew to lift it out. We man handled it to the dock and carted it to the repair shop. Not any fun but it is fixable though we are going to a Westerbeke 5.5 KW since we have the room. A bit pricey but we get three cylinders and 1800 RPM so it should be quieter. Hope yours comes out ok. The shaft seal failed because the belt tension was excessive.

Hi Stuart, we had a voltage problem with our Mase 2.7 in our Ranger Tug 27. Our dealer talked to Sergio at Mase in Hallandale Beach FL and he told him it was a bad capacitor. They sent me a new one and gave me a rough idea of how to replace it. I ran into the same issue you did with the wet exhaust so I just took it out. It was an easy job to get to everything after that. It's on the back left corner at the very bottom, mounted in the frame with a white dust cap on it. The whole job took about an hour to do. I'm not sure how much room you have on your Cutwater, but once the exhaust is out, it's an easy job. Good luck

Well I just got a call last night and the short version is after 59 hours the stator is history. That's what was smoking. Looks like this season will be minus a generator.
