Pulled my boat this week for cleaning (much needed).
Have power washed, sanded and in the process of applying paint.
Question is, there is a +/-3' long metal plate fastened to the keel just in front of the properler. What is it for, bottom protection or is there some other use for this? Also, it does not appear to be painted and from my way of thinking any metal in the water should be painted to reduce growth (there were a lot of mussels attached when pulled). Should I be applying paint to this or leave it as clean metal?

Thanks in advance

I call it a skid plate. Yes it should be painted with an anti-fouling paint made for metal.
