All,

I recently purchased a Cutwater 30 in Seattle and imported it into Canada (Victoria) where I live. The importation process was smooth - all well handled by a customs broker who helped me to get the boat registered in BC (and pay taxes!).

I now want to get a new, Canadian issued MMSI number and to re-program the onboard AIS transponder and VHF radio. Does anyone have experience in doing this? Can anyone provide advice?

Specifically, can the reformat removing the current US MMSI number be done over the network or do I need to locate and physically re-program the AIS transponder. If it needs to be physically altered, can someone tell me where to find it onboard? It doesn't seem obvious. Is it best to have a dealer do this?

I am also interested in connecting the Trackvision system to a Canadian provider. Someone told me that Bell is the only provider in Canada - is this the case? If so, what is involved in making this change? Do I need to find the Trackvision box? Again, where is this hidden on the boat?

Thanks to any and all who can point me in the right direction!

First thing I would do is obtain a new MMSI from Canada's issuing authority. In America it can be the FCC or Boat US. Only the FCC issued ones are good internationally. It might be issued by Industry Canada office. This is a link that might help:

In terms of reprogramming all the ones I know of require you to be physically at the machine. Some can only be programmed by a dealer or a factory service center. Some can be re-programmed by the end user. The equipment vendor should be able to guide you.

In the states the Coast Guard requires AIS to be done by an authorized dealer or service center. I'm sure someone can chime in on Canadian regulations.

I believe Canada requires a license to operate a Marine VHF if you don't have one already.

In regards to the Track Vision unit, if it's like the one on my boat it isn't a satellite TV dish but instead an amplified TV antenna. It works with over the air TV stations only.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I will get a Garmin dealer to do the change.
