Hi,
A very experienced boater recommends I upgrade to a 40 lb anchor for my R31. He likes the Rocna anchors. So I'm thinking the Rocna 20 (44 lbs). I'm about to check its dimensions with what I have, but am hoping others might already be using the Rocna 20, and hopefully without modifications?
Thanks
Dave

Go to the Rocna webpage. The Rocna site has full size paper patterns you can print out. Tape the pattern together and cut out a piece of card board to match. You then can slide the pattern into your current setup to see if it fits. They also have a sizing guide for there anchors. I choose a 15kg model. Seems to work fine for us.

The Rocna 15 seems to be the one folks go with on their 31s. If you go larger make sure the blade wont hit the bow when stored and that it will retrieve into the bracket as the the shank may be too large. Also consider adding more chain as Im told that chain can be just as important as a larger anchor.

We recently installed a Rocha 15 on our R31 CB. Works great. As the previous posts mention there are 2 points to consider. With the 15 the point of the blade rests about and inch from the bow when the anchor is full up on the roller and the shank, with the bend in it, just clears under the bail. IMO,for a 20, you will need to extend the roller outward to ensure the blade point does not hit the bow when stored and heighten the bail to allow the shank to clear. Hope this helps...

The Rocna 15 KG works for Willie's Tug. At least it does when the Captain follows proper anchoring procedure. Learned a lot about what works and does not work this trip..thanks Ray Perry. We do have 100' of chain.

Thanks all for the comments and advice.

As suggested, I downloaded the (10 page) full scale drawing of the Rocna 20, taped the pages together, then taped that to some heavy cardboard and cut out the anchor outline. Then fitted my cardboard anchor to the boat.

Definitely the existing bail would have to be replaced with a taller one (or maybe I could do without a bail and just tie the shank or chain back to the small cleat for safety after retrieving the anchor). The suggestion to move the roller (and bail) forward might not eliminate the bail/shank interference, though it would increase the anchor tip/bow distance (next point)

The tip (point) of the anchor was 1 inch from the heavy rubber piece on the leading edge of the bow. There was no apparent movement of the anchor that would bring the point closer (while in the cradle).

Andrew replied "I think a 40lb anchor is WAY overkill for the 31. If you look at an anchor chart, a 40 lb. anchor is set to hold a much larger vessel. I have anchored many times with a 22lb anchor on the 29 and 31. If you step up to the next size, I think you will be just fine. "

Captain Mac replied "There is an old adage, the bigger the anchor, the better. But I think the 15 kg is plenty for the 31. If the conditions warrant a storm anchor, I'd head to a marina! "

So I'll rethink the 43# Rocna 20 anchor vs a 33# Rocna 15. If I decide on the 20, I'll post a picture here.

Thanks again
Dave

Good info folks, interesting article in "Boating" magazine July/August edition, page 64, a dozen anchors are tested.

Check it out.

I recently took advantage of the Active Captain/ Defender deal on a Rocna. I upgraded to the Rocna 15 on my boat. I extended the roller out and replaced the bail with a 5" bail from West Marine. The fit and operation of the windlass is fine. I have not anchored out yet but I think I will sleep better at night when the wind blows.
