Now that the B.C. Parks are open for day use, does anyone know if the mooring buoys and dingy dock are available?

According to the Waggoner Guide's updated list: Moorage and Services Closed thru June; Cafe and Store Closed; Marine Fuel sales available on Saturdays; Marine Park Buoys Closed.

Check under the British Columbia Waters tab for updates and other locations.

Cheers,

Bruce

Sidney spit has been closed but all the buoys have been used. I have written to BC Parks about Montague and will pass on the response.

Looking across at Newcastle Island Marine Park. Buoys remain off limits as does the dock.

Waggoner Cruising Guide will present another free webinar this Thursday for CV19 - Boating Update, What's Open... Eventbrite is coordinating the signups.

Has anyone heard about a quarantine period once the border has been opened?

I think it's too early to call on quarantine. At the moment we are all waiting for a decision on the boarder opening. That's a Federal decision and the indication being given to us here in BC is that the US administration are anxious to open but that the three Provinces with large populations, BC, Ontario and Quebec are pressuring the Ottawa government to keep it closed other than for essential travel. The BC health minister did comment before the weekend that an open border would not automatically mean an end to quarantine requirements. Another consideration should be to ask whether the Gulf Island communities will be opening to transients from either side of the border. They are very sensitive as they have only limited healthcare resources and at present are asking visitors to stay away.

A final decision for us who would like to visit family south of the border is that we would have no health insurance. The Canadian government and the CDC in the US continue level 3 notices so no travel insurance is valid.

So near......yet so far

So the update this morning is that the border will remain closed for another 30 days. I believe that takes us until June 20.

I haven’t had a response from the Parks guys about Montague but yesterday was a holiday so they wouldn’t have been working.

Here is what I received from the private park operator this afternoon:

All BC Parks are open for day use only until June 1st, this means mooring buoys and docks are open for day use only and no staying overnight until June 1 st at all B.C. Marine Parks.
hope this helps

Interestingly I received this reply within one hour of contacting them. BC Parks (by email and voicemail) have yet to respond to my queries.

Good to know, thanks. Maybe B.C. Parks are just turning a blind eye to the ones they operate themselves, like the Spit. It was packed all weekend. People were taking a dinghy to the beach but maintaining far more than 2 m separation and it seemed to be family units.

I may go to Montague in the next week but based on your input I will just drop a hook and enjoy the peace.

I'm sure they must be exhausted from all that non-working and closures!

We have similar requirements in the state of Washington. I understand day use on the docks because of social distancing, but what is the difference from spending the night on a mooring buoy or anchoring? For an all day run it is hard to get to some of the places in the San Juan Islands just to turn around and come home.
