Mooring with Outboard Trimmed Down

Hello,

We have an R-27 OB on the way, and our preferred marina has a long wait list for boats over 32’ LOA. There is also a wait list for boats up to 32’, but it is shorter. The LOA of the R-27 OB (motor up) is 33’4” so we won’t be allowed to keep the motor up in the 32’ slip. It seems we can expect some added growth as a result and are looking for creative options, perhaps a cover for the lower unit when sitting in the water for extended periods. Ideas are welcome.

For me, saltwater would be a hard no. Fresh water would be a little more viable, but not desirable.

My experience is that most marinas don’t crack down on a little overhang on the dock or in the fairway. I had my 27 ob in a 30 foot slip without anyone…caring at all…many were longer.

Look around and if you’re not the only one, talk to them and see what they say.

My biggest concern would be galvanic reaction. I know of one instance where an owner had to replace his lower unit because it got eaten away. If you are going to leave the motor down make sure you are well bonded and have spare zincs for the engine.

The only external anodes for the Yamaha F300 are the trim tabs, engine/transom anode, and the rudder anode just above the propeller on the lower unit. Leaving the lower unit in the water for a longer period of time, I'd want to make sure the boat had a galvanic isolator.

Maybe just don’t plug in to shore power constantly to avoid some of the corrosion issues associated with that.

If in salt or brackish water I would recommend you have fresh water available and flush the drive thoroughly and frequently. Perhaps even install an automatic timer to do it for you. There are plenty of anodes on the exterior portion of the outdrive that are easy to see deteriorate and to change when needed but the 8 in the engine are apparently tough to get to easily.

You can also have the outdrive painted below the water line to help slow corrosion but you might regret having done that once you’re able to tilt the drive.

If it were me I would just use the boat and enjoy it the best you can.
