I have a Newport Vessels Dana (8'10" long by 5' wide, weighs 107 pounds). It has a Honda 5 hp 62 lb motor on it.

I want to store and transport the dinghy, with the motor attached, on top of the deck house on my R27 SC. At my tender age of 66+, I need to get it up there using a lifting davit. I'd like to mount the davit on the roof just fore of the "smokestack" and then lift the dinghy up into a cradle on the supports provided for kayaks, etc.

I completely understand that most lifting davits are placed on the deck or the gunnels, but I need this one davit to be able to lift the dinghy up from the water on either side of the R27. Hence, mounting it on the centerline of the R27 -- which means either mounting it on the roof, or mounting it near the transom and then having an impossibly long arm to get it onto the racks on the roof.

Have any of you mounted a lifting davit on the roof of your Ranger Tug? If so, where and how did you mount it and how happy are you with the results?

Thanks,
Retirement Dream, Scott

Without knowing your actual needs, I would rethink things. I have a feeling with that setup you will not use your dingy often. An 8'-6" on swim step davits with a small gas or electric motor will be much more user friendly. Boating is all about compromise.

Hi Scott,

I came up with a solution. Not exactly what you described, but it's a davit that lifts the dinghy from the port side of the boat up onto the top center of the coach roof. If you PM me your email address I can send you a couple of pictures, but I don't have a way to embed them into a post on this forum.

The davit came from Atkins and Hoyle, in Canada. https://www.atkinshoyle.com/products/dinghy-cranes-and-hoists/3000-rotating-crane.html

I have sold the boat so probably won't be able to get more pictures, but I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.
