Had a nice email chat with the Navimatics guru today. He set me up with an ipa that allows me to beta test the new Navimatics for the iPad a few weeks ahead of the public beta test. He says that tugnut folks can contact him if we want to get a head start on it:

I have started messing with it this evening. It is much more visually pleasing than the Garmin app, which is not hard to do, but I am still futzing with the route planner, which is so very important. It searches much faster than the Garmin, but its screen refresh seems a bit slower.

Folks like Barry who know the nuts and bolts need to test drive this and give the developer feedback. This is how better apps are made. Have fun!

Hi: I've been beta testing this since April of this year. I like it and have sent feedback on at least one crash which now has been resolved.

It's compatible with Apple's Mavericks and I run it on a 17" MacBook Pro with an internal SSD. It responds super fast to inputs and Route configuration I find is quite easy to master.

Not seeing any screen refresh issues that you mentioned.

Zooming in/out will chew up the CPU... but that's expected and typically not done frequently or continuously.

I really like it for giving precise distances in the Route planning task.

It has a nice day / night feature for screen brightness.
