I'm in the process of commissioning a new Cutwater C30 Sedan in Washington State, and had a marine surveyor (Wayne Gilham from Tacoma) do an inspection. It was well worth it, as it turned up a few minor issues to check with the factory and some regulations I was unaware of. A couple of those observations may be generally useful for others, both Cutwater and Ranger Tugs:
- Fire extinguishers were delivered unmounted, but per USCG regs should be mounted in their originally supplied brackets. I will mount those before the next outing. Most likely that will require drilling holes for the brackets, but I'm considering other options (e.g., industrial velcro behind the brackets, if they can rest on the floor sideways somewhere and have adequate support).
- Because our boat will be USCG documented and we use a motor for the dinghy, the dinghy requires WA State registration. The rules are complex, but AFAICT the gist seems to be: (1) if boat has WN# then dinghy is OK up to 10hp if it is used for shore transport only. (2) if the boat is USCG documented, then dinghy needs a WN# if you use any engine or motor with it (rowing is OK without WN#).
- We could not locate smoke alarms. I'm not sure whether they were omitted by the factory, but I've ordered a couple and will mount. (CO monitors are installed.)
