I downloaded the new version (12/16/18 version 13.1) of the Navionics Boating Marine & Lakes onto my Ipad. There is a 14 day free trial period then the US and Canada map is $23.99 per year. It contains Active Captain and a navigation planner called Dock to Dock. The dock to dock feature is pretty cool for planning trips on an Ipad, it automatically plans the route for every waypoint entered. Some reviewers complain about the yearly subscription fee after purchasing maps for the prior version. Is anyone familiar with this app, what are your thoughts?

I have it installed on my iPad. I use it because the Navionic charts last year were more detailed compared to the Garmin charts. I use the Navionics charts for back up. The active Captain app has the same feature from what you are describing. I have 7612 plotter and have downloaded the charts from the plotter to my iPad. I can now use the active captain app to do all my trip planning by entering way points and the magenta line appears. When I link the iPad up to the Chart plotter via Active Captain all the way points and routes are loaded on the 7612 and remain on the iPad. I pre planned my 650 mile trip on the Tennessee River last fall using this. I was able to use auto pilot on the complete trip. The chart plotter showed the magenta line from my route planning helping me to locate channel markers in the waters that I was unfamiliar with. My wife was able to follow along with the iPad seeing the same chart and image as I was. In areas I felt comfortable using auto pilot the route plan was followed exactly by the auto pilot, turning at bends in the river and keeping the boat in the channel and also giving me time of arrival and distance to destination for each day's trip. I assume the Navionics App has the same capabilities. I will purchase another year. I like redundancy when it comes to navigational aids.
