New R25SC Owner

Hi Tugnuts!

After many years of dreaming and searching, we took delivery of a 2013 R25SC today. We took her out today for a short cruise and had a great time!

We have owned a couple different boats in the past. I have a couple of questions that came up during the survey. This boat has the Volvo D3.

1. Has anyone had any issues with the engine mount base plates corroding due to sea water being sprayed on them? If so what was your fix?

2. We found 2 green bonding wires with ring terminal fittings in the engine room near the shaft seal disconnected. Does anyone know what they are for?

Congrats on the new-to-you boat!

The green wires are part of the bonding system, likely disconnected from a prop shaft brush that is either missing or simply disconnected.

Thanks for the reply. I took a closer look today and found what I think is a broken screw that held the wires in place. Looks like I have my first project!

For issue #1. First stop/reduce salt water from getting in your engine bay, second, rinse engine bay often with fresh water and/or Salt Away/Off.

Most likely the salt water is coming from the stuffing box. Factory boats do not have a drip less stuffing box. It is normal for them to drip around 3x/min when under way. When the shaft turns this drip turns into a spray, especially if the drip is at a higher rate. Besides adjusting the drip rate to spec a spray shield can help. You can fashion one easily out of some plastic. I made mine from a plastic gallon oil jug. It uses the jug neck to snap to the stuffing box with no fasteners. Some salt also can come in from the hatch seals or when clearing the sea chest of debris, or when changing impeller etc. In any case a regular rinse with fresh water or Salt Away solution is recommended. A regular spray with lubricant on the engine mounts and other components prone to corrosion helps as well.

Hi I have the same problem of water spray from the shaft of my RT 29s. Can you share a picture of your solution?

I took a plastic 1/2 gallon milk jug and cut off the top, split it down the front and back and slid it over the shaft. isn't attached anywhere and is easy to pull off for packing adjustment. 4 years and 2000 hrs and still using the same jug.
