Hello, Everyone:
I'd like to indroduce myself, a new (I hope) R27OB owner. I say I hope, because my boat is scheduled for the end of May since Ranger is now going to be back working Monday.

As you might expect, we are very excited to have them working again! The wait has been tough, but pales compared to the troubles so many are having with this Covid thing. Our hearts go out to you all.

Since we now are getting close, I have a question for the board:

What do you use for an anchor? Stock or have you changed? On my old boat, a Maxum 2400, I used a Bruce, and was happy overall but felt it was not holding as well as I would have liked on certain types of bottoms. Andrew Custis seems to be excited about the Rocna anchor, and I have read some reviews that rate it highly. Anybody have one? How well does it sit in the anchor rollers?

We have a Rocna 15 on our R27 Classic. It fits perfectly on our roller but I don’t know about it on an OB. The factory supplied Lewmar is now our backup. The Lewmar was fine for lunch stops but we never felt very comfortable with the set over night and always used an anchor alarm. The Rocna sets so quickly and firmly we do not even bother with an anchor alarm. You will know when it is set. Over 30 anchorages on the Inside Passage last summer without ever having to reset or dragging. It can foul however, we had to cut our beloved Rocna loose in Ford’s Terror when it got fouled. Struggled with the Lewmar anchor sets from there home. Bought a new a new Rocna 15 as soon as we got home.

Thanks, Curt. Sorry you lost your Rocna at fords's Terror, but it sure is a beautiful spot, isn't it? We visited it on our old boat in 2000. Is it as uncrowded as it was then? Most of the bigger boats were chicken to go in.

We second Curt's Rocna recommendation. We also have a 27 Classic, but we went with the smaller Rocna 10. No problems whatsoever, but then we haven't done the Inside Passage -- and we don't intend to. We'll just stay here in Puget Sound, the San Juans and Gulf Islands, where we've been boating for over forty years in craft of all sizes, both power and sail. For this area, we decided the smaller anchor would do. No regrets. The Rocna is far and away the best anchor we've ever owned.

Congrats on your new boat!

We have a 2019 R27-OB. We switched from the Lewmar (Bruce style) 7.5kg anchor to the Rocna 10. It was a perfect fit for our existing roller, and is well suited for the boat displacement. It sets fast and holds firm!

Call Fisheries Supply (Sara) for a price quote with a RT discount.

Enjoy your new boat... exciting!

Incredible spot! We had only 2-4 other boats so plenty of room. Lots of shrimp. Beautiful weather. Worth the price of a lost anchor! Many icebergs on the way in and out Endicott Arm. Should be on everyone’s bucket list if you are adventurous!

Here’s a shot of us from the Airship drone on slowboat.com. We are on the far left. They have a bunch more great photos on that page as well. We just happen to be at the same anchorage. Not traveling together.

In keeping with Red Raven’s experience with losing an anchor, I’ve been considering getting an emergency anchor and short chain rode. The Mantus M1 anchor looks interesting because it can be disassembled for compact storage. Anyone using the M1 as primary anchor or as a spare?

I have a 2019 R/T 27 OB
I just upgraded from factory anchor to Rocna 10/ 22#. Ran into a problem as it appears the newer ones have different measurements than previously. The one I ordered did not fit.....the "shovel" portion was about an inch too long, placing the point up against the hull ( bow). The resolution to this was that I found an older model at West Marine with older specs.... fit as expected.

scross,
The Mantus 1 does sound nice for stowage.
However, in an emergency and you lose your primary anchor and probably all or part of the rode, how long will it take to assemble this anchor deploy it.
I have no experience with Mantus or any collapsible anchor so I am curious.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
The Mantus 1 anchor bolts together with 6 big bolts so it shouldn’t take too long to reassemble.
I’d also plan on carrying a spare 200-250 ft of 8 plait rode and 50+ ft of HT 9/16” chain to complete the set-up. That’s what my current rode+chain setup is. I’ve got storage room under the v-berth cushions.

WOW!
9/16" chain is pretty good size.
Changing out the 200 ft of 1/2" 3 strand for 8 plait.
Blue has 50 ft of 5/16" chain.

Bill,
Yeah, whoops, typo on the chain size. It’s 5/16”. The 8 plait rode lays down great but it is a bit slippery in the windlass when wet. I’d still go with 8 plait over 3 strand though.

I kinda of figured it was a typo.
Interesting on the 8 plait being slippery.
I was reading up on the stuff and it says to soak it in water, fresh or salt, before use.
Slipping on the gypsy is not good.

I see you live in Ashland, OR,
I lived in Grants Pass or Grass Pants as we called it for 16 years before a job transfer to Salt Lake City in 1994.
Job transfer with the same company moved me to GP from Los Angeles.
