Seems like a lot of us have had stern thruster issues lately. In my case an oak leaf plugged up the weep hole and water built up in the chamber that houses the thruster. Once the motor gets wet, that is the end. While it might have been possible to rebuild the motor, I opted for a new one.

Interestingly, the new motor has some improvements over the older style. The new one, pictured here, has stainless steel trim rings all around the housing. Old one didn't have that.

This new design will provide more torque for the fasteners and likely more even torque. Sidepower must have been having problems.

My new stern thruster arrives tomorrow.

Just bought a complete unit, power head and gear leg, from Marine Warehouse in Alabama for $2,200 includes $28 shipping to the west coast. Took a little of the sting out of having to replace it.

I have a sneaking suspicion that a replacement for my stern thruster may be in my future. I have a 2008 R25. Do you think I would need to change out the tunnel as well or was your replacement able to use the existing tunnel?

All I had to replace with the motor assembly. Tunnel and drive gear remained in place so no hull to water interface was disturbed. As long as your prop moves without restrictions and the gear looks good, you probably only need to replace the motor.

I also replaced motor only.

Is there any place that sells just the motor?
