new thru hull transducer

I will be installing a new, bronze low profile, through hull transducer on my R25sc, through meaning I will be cutting a 2" diameter hole. It needs to be in an area that has a 0-8 degree dead rise. I hope to be putting it more towards the center of the boat perhaps just aft of the hot water heater where it can be accessed by putting a inspection panel beneath the starboard storage hatch. Since this is a somewhat blind operation it would be good to know if-

> or if there is a drawing available showing cross section of hull near this location to help locate transducer in a non critical readily accessible area?

Any information appreciated before I start cutting hole.

On other boats I had ones that mounted on the transom.. If the type that shoot through the hull don't work for you I would look at the transom to avoid a big hole in the bottom of the boat, unless there is a reason the stern ones won't work.

I am considered a transducer that will give water temp, which obviously require a direct water connection. I am also curious about the thru-hull vs transom issue.

I will be very interested on how it works and where you mount it. For sure, if you do not get cavitation affecting it, you will recieve better, more accurate information. I mounted a couple in my previous troller (wood)... You simply have to treat it (properly) like any other thru-hull.

A transom mount will not produce much valid signal on our boats due to the in board prop wash, unless you are not running. I will be installing an additional transom transducer for still fishing. While you are underway, for a good signal, you need a thru hull away from sources of water disturbance. Since I use the boat extensively for fishing a big hole is a necessary by product- nearly every good fishing boat has these transducers mounted in the hull. The problem is where. Apparently there is not much info for our boats.

I have a 2008 R-25 and installed a thru-hull transducer. I placed it on the port side of the engine and made sure to not place it in line with the bunks of the trailer so as not to stress it. I haven't had a problem with prop-wash or cavitation interrupting the reading. The installation was relatively easy, though any time you drill a hole in the hull it can be unnerving.

Do you think you could describe in a little more detail where you located your transducer? Did you put in on a flat? There are 2 semi flat (nearly parallel to the water) areas on each side of the keel. I am concerned about drilling through only to find that I am in a structural member or too close to it to make the transducer fit. How did you determine where to place the transducer? The one I am using has nearly a flat profile so I am not as concerned about the bunks as I am misplacing the hole location. I would be very thankful for the feedback.

Could you use a good quality stud-finder and a piece of steel on the opposite side? Haven't tried it but seems possible.

This is the transducer that I bought and installed in 2010: Garmin Airmar Smart Sensor 12 Degree Tilted NMEA 2000 DT800 - 010-11105-01. I placed it on a flat area to the port of the engine. If I'm able, I will take a photo of it and send.
