Fluid Motion Model
C-24 C (Sterndrive)
Hi all, I have enjoyed reading a great number of posts and wondering if I can get some information. We recently we lucky enough to get a Ranger 21 with ten hours on the clock from a great uncle who lived in Washington. We live in North Dakota and spend a great deal of time on the Missouri river. However the speed of this Missouri river which runs about six miles per hour and this tug does not seem to be able to keep up to the river went going up current. We can go up current but it takes a long time to move a mile. Nor does it seem to be really able to do any type of speed (less then 10) I am guessing. I believe I read that top speed is 10 knots is that correct. I am afraid if we can not get more speed out of the boat we will be forced to sell. Any ideas?

With only 10 hours, it is probably a newer model. My 21 has an 18 hp and cruises at 5 or so knots at 2400 rpm. Wide open, I may get 7 knots. If you have a 30 hp, you may be looking about 9 knots. So yes they are NOT speed demons...grins.

It says it is a 30hp inside the cabin.

I have an idea. The R-21 is a great boat. How about keep the boat and move to a place where you can use it?

You have a great little boat there, however, she will be a challenge for you if you must stick to the river. Our 2009 model also has the 30 HP Yanmar, and we barely reach speeds of 8 kts. or better. At 3000 rpm she will normally do 7.8 kts. Why not trailer her to Lake Sakakawea and enjoy life at a slower pace? Or else enjoy the free six knots, and have someone meet you downstream with the trailer.

Are you sure it is a 30 hp Yanmar? Look on the engine and let us know what the plate says. A notice in our 2006 tug pilot house mentions "if you have the 30 hp Yanmar you can carry a capacity of . . ." something like that. We assumed it had the optional 30 hp Yanmar but the engine is the standard 20 hp Yanmar. We don't mind the engine size - hardly uses any fuel and it is the cruise that is important to us - not the destination! What year is your tug?
