I have a 29 ranger Tug and am looking for a dinghy and just wondered if anyone has had experience with a newport dinghy? Are there other dinghy's one might recommend under 8 feet? Main use would be going to shore for the dog or for bird watching. I have a torqeedo electric motor. thanks in advance

Hi. We bought and Achilles 7.5 foot hypalon with a roll up (not slatted) /removable marine wood floor. Flat bottom. Rolls up to store in large center Lazarette with ease. Use a Suzuki 2.5 four stroke with up. Can blow it up right in cockpit and we are an R23!
Happy Hunting
P.S. Recently saw a Portland Pudgy and thought very cool. Over 100 lb and unsinkable but would need davits if that inflatable rack made for the larger Rangers. Good Luck

I have an Achilles also. It's the LT-2 model with removeable wooden floor. We use the Suzuki DF2.5. Very light, I can stow it in the cargo box I have bolted to my roof rails on the C-28.

I have a larger dingy also, but the Achilles I always have with me. Easy to blow up in the cockpit.

I also have a Ranger 29 and my dinghy is an AB Aluminum hulled center console with a 20hp Tohatsu outboard. The dinghy hangs off the back on a "Dinghy Butler" davit controlled by a Warn winch capable of lifting 2000lbs. The dinghy is exactly the same length as the boat is wide. Launching is a ten second job using a hand held remote. The dinghy planes easily and can do about 25 knots. Cruising speed is 15 or so.

We have been very happy with our Portland Pudgy - very stable, rows well and works well with our Torqeedo as well.

i cannot speak highly enough about Achilles hypalon dinghies. I bought one with a wood floor around 2000. Used it with both 2hp and an 8hp motor for years. Never any issues. Kept it clean, stored in indoors offseason. Only work ever done to it other than clean, polish with dinghy cleaner/polish was to revarnish the floor boards once. Sold it in 2017 for about the same price I paid for it! Still in great shape!

What davit do you use with that?

Hi. I have a Newport dinghy. It's the Dana model and I power it with a Torqeedo 1103 long shaft. I couldn't be happier! The main thing that I love about the Newport is the size of its tubes. I weigh close to 300 pounds and, because of the large diameter o the tubes I can sit on one anywhere in the boat and it still sails flat.

To answer JFrano's question about davit for Portland Pudgy: We have the Pudgy mounted on the swim step with Weaver davits and Weaver stainless steel stand-offs from the tug transom. The Pudgy launches/retrieves easily with a block & tackle setup we have that rigs from an eye under our hard cockpit canopy to two more Weaver attachments on the top of the Pudgy.

I too have the Portland Pudgy with Weaver davits, etc on my 2018 R29. Works great, very quick launch/retrieve. I also appreciate the stability the davits provide when boarding the Pudgy.

Used to have the Torqeedo, but got tired of the whine of the engine, constantly replacing shear pins that rust out, and continual challenges with plugging/unplugging in all the bits. Replaced the Torqeedo with an ePropulsion Spirit and have been very happy so far.

Jerry,
Do you have railings on your swim platform on your 29?
Thanks,
Bobby

Sorry..,I know this started out as an inquiry on the Newport Dingy.
Yes, I’m starting to lean towards the Portland Pudgy; 17” narrower than standard 10’ dingy and yet wider interior space, although not as long. Thinking of utilizing a 3hp motor, hoping to get a little zip out of it.

The Weaver Davit is the vertical mount? How is the rear view
Obstruction, given the narrower width than a standard RIB.
Also do you have to remove motor when stored in Davit?
Thanks
Joe

We use a small plastic dingy from the plasticboats.com 55 lbs and 7 1/2 feet long. Fits the mounts that I made for our C 24. Very easy to manage and we use a trolling motor.

Having the Portland Pudgy and Weaver Davit installed vertically outside the swim deck.

The two standoffs, Do they remove, from the boat side as well as the pudgy when in use? Or do they just lay across the swim deck?

Bobby P we have a 2010 R29 with Weaver Davits and we do have rails on the swim platform.

2010 R29 Chessie

I'm pretty sure they're the same davit standoffs that the Ranger branded RIB uses and those have identical clips on the boat side to the ones on the dinghy side and so entirely removeable. I tuck mine under the transom seat when not in use.
