Nice article about an "Unusual Puget Sound Anchorage" - the Nisqually Flats - by Jennifer and James Garner, authors of "Cruising the Secret Coast" and the wonderful MV Dirona blog.

We look forward to exploring this area. Any South Sounders care to add some local knowledge?

I can't add any local knowledge, but I have often thought about exploring that area in the Red Ranger...a weekend trip from Tacoma to/from Olympia might be just the ticket to explore that area.

You up for such a trip? The first weekend in October works for moi...

Hey Johnnie - we've got tentative plans that weekend, but will let you know if we head that way. Tacoma and Olympia are both on our list of destinations. Looks like the South Sound has plenty to explore. Let us know what you discover if we don't cross wakes.

Cheers

Yes, I'm beginning to explore the South Sound area, and like what I've found so far.

One of the best things so far: the lack of boats. No kidding! From Tacoma north to the San Juans during summer, it's Boat City!!!

But in the South Sound, you'll see far fewer boats and less hustle 'n bustle if/when you do head for a marina. Here's a good overview of boating in Puget Sound, with special emphasis on the South Sound: http://www.geocities.com/bill_fiero/southsound.htm

Cheers,

Johnniethek,
