Nizpro Tune Repower?

Hi Rocky,
Is this something that you see would be done with a prop change too or are you thinking it is a stand alone item that could be done as an alternative to a prop change?
I know that you have already done a prop change. I assume by the continued search that you are still looking for a better "mix"

I worry about my extended warranty out of fear that it would be an excuse to cancel it in the event that I actually had to use it?

But with that said, 30 extra hp for under 1k seems pretty interesting especially if it means less fuel burn.

Yes, I'm looking at another direction, prop-wise.

I had a chat with Ken who recommended: raise engines one notch, add transom wedges for stern lift and use 17" OFS4 blade (NOT 5) PowerTech props. Then, he brought up this Nizpro thing, that I've never heard of. I am researching and have a call into PowerTech. Raising engines is the opposite of what I was advised in past.

Unfortunately, it's not like I have a 30hp on a runabout like I did long ago, these steps require a haul out, so it's all research at this point. I'd really like to hear from someone, vendor or owner, with my same boat experience.

Tunes might increase your performance under certain conditions, however what I can gaurantee is they won't increase your reliability. Do you really want to risk engine issues or premature failure on a single engine boat?

There are cases that the same block is used, but detuned for different HP ratings, which may also change other parts (i.e. carbs, intake, extra-cooling). The Yamaha 4.2L V6 maxes out 300hp, so this isn't one of the cases that you can safely squeeze out more power.

Just my 2 cents

sounds like an engine ECU remap. with the EPA's restrictions on emissions its likely just releasing some performance with minimal impact to reliability. you do need to be careful though and watch for warranty issues

Did he mention anything about 89 octane fuel? I looked at doing the nizpro tune. It requires 89 octane fuel once re-tuned. In Puget Sound and the San Juan's, all that's available to me is 87 octane. I even looked at using boostane (octane booster). Scientific tests have since been performed that illustrated that boostane is not acceptable. I would need a reliable source for 89 octane fuel once re-tuned, which I can not guarantee at every fill up. Nizpro advertises that if you run 87 octane after re-tuned, real engine damage is possible.

I did the Nizpro tune on my F200...The R23 is under-powered in my opinion. I installed drop fins, autoglide and moved the house batteries to the center lazarette for better performance. I finally tried the ECU Remap by Nizpro. I did gain an increase of 200 RPM and better throttle response. The biggest change was an increase in fuel efficiency, I went from 2.1 to 2.6 mpg at 4700 RPM and 24 kt cruise. I did a lot of research prior and found no known pre-mature engine failures due to the ECU Remap. Next planned upgrade is to re-prop. Waiting on more information to become available on the Powertech 5 blade modifications. Will advise if I come across any negative results from the Nizpro.....

Sadly, I have the same problem with gas octane. At my harbor in Half Moon Bay, CA, there is only 87 off brand gas. I add either Techron Marine or Yamalube, however, octane boosters sound like a bad idea. There is one marina with 89 Valvtect gas, but, it's in Oakland.
