Subject: Notifying other Ranger Tugs about their radar signature

A week or so back Herb (Willie's Tug) brought up the issue of radar signatures for Ranger Tugs. It was a good subject to discuss etc.

I've been thinking about how we Ranger Tug owners can help each other related to this subject.

My suggestion is as follows...

When you see another RT on the water and you have radar then detect and note the radar signature of this RT and communicate this info to it as a courtesy gesture. 🙂

I'm not sure what actual terms or description of the radar signature should be used, but maybe others here can advise on the best way to communicate the radar signature information. Of course, the radar settings & configuration can influence what kind of radar signature you observe... so somehow your radar settings/configuration needs to be added to the communication. Then again, maybe someone can detail here a 'good' radar setting/configuration that we all use consistently for performing this courtesy. 🙂

Using the radar's factory settings thus far, every target looks like a blob or streak of butterscotch pudding. I guess I have some fine tuning to do and will appreciate others' advice/experience.

CaptCrunch:

On my previous R-25 using I believe the factor settings I found most objects that my radar picked up showed nicely as round or somewhat elliptical orange blobs. What I do find distracting is the large orange smudgy areas on the screen that represent land masses.

Maybe at the Roche Harbour GTG in September some knowledgeable person can provide good info on radar settings/configurations etc.

As in previous years, Garmin will have a team on the docks.
