I was wondering if anyone has found navigation downloads for their Android device/tablet? I just got a 12.2 Note Pro. And would like to use it as a companion diply.

Try using Navionics. I use this on both my Android smart phone and Android Samsung tab 10.1, as a backup to my chartplotter.

Thank you. That is the one I was considering. We are thinking of taking CORPSVET from WA. to points South (CA, NV, AZ, and Co ++ ). Want to do some lakes and rivers. Do you like the app? How much memory do the maps need?
Thanks Dave

Dave,

I haven't checked the memory requirement. However, you can selectively download maps just for the regions you need.

I've been contemplating this same topic. Why does everyone reference only using the Navionics on a tablet as a backup system? Is it slow? I ask because I've used a laptop with nav software and a USB GPS puck for years as my primary chart plotter. I've been thinking about switching to an android tablet. Is there some reason that is not feasible? From what I've gathered so far none of the android tablet apps can handle vector charts. But vector vs raster is mostly a matter of convenience and/or enhanced functionality. Interested in feedback from any users.

NorthernFocus,

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I use Navionics Boating USA on an Android Motorola Droid Maxx smartphone and Navionics Boating HD on an Android Samsung Tablet 10.1 (a 3 year old tablet). Navionics works just fine and with speed on both of them.

I looked at he website but am still not clear. With the Boating HD for the tablet do you have to pay for the Navionics charts or can you download NOAA charts and use them?

As far as I am concerned the NAVIONICS web site is one of the worst out there with one of the best products. I finally figured how to download the U.S. and Canadian base map and then the charts that go with that (base map is free and then you pay for the chart download). Total cost was about $55.00. Very reasonable for what you get! I downloaded them on my 8" Samsung tablet which is GPS "hot". Since it is GPS "hot" I do not need a provider such as Verizon, AT&T, etc. It is fast and very easy to operate. My wife and I put 1291 miles on our 25SC this summer exploring from Seattle to Bella Bella area and back. Before we left I spent many an hour using the Navionics not only to learn how to use it but to explore areas I knew we wanted to visit.

We have the 5212 Garmin and the Samsung was on the dash at all times. Becasue of the Navionics we explored many areas (espeially the many islands below Bella Bella) that I would not have done without it. I could expand and move to areas we were approaching quickly and then expand that area to search for depths and shoals. And it is comforting when you enter this area to know that if the Garmin goes down I still have a chart plotter.

One Thought here. If you are going to buy a tablet just be sure it has build in GPS or you are going to have to connect to a GPS dongle. I was in Costco the other day and Samsung now has a "new" 8" tablet that looks just like mine. However, for some reason they have eliminated the GPS feature. Go figure.

I finally got around to downloading the Navionics app and couldn't find it  There's no download link on the Navionics site but there is a link. The link takes you to Google Play but to some sort of skiing app. And a search for "navionics" on GooglePlay only brought up the same ski app, no Boating HD. Wonder what's up?
