I've re-fitted the windlass to handle 1/2" line/1/4" chain. I've currently got 175ft of 1/2" three strand w/50ft of 1/4" chain. Trying to decide whether to simply splice on additional three strand or replace it with 300ft of braid/brait.

I'd appreciate input from anyone who is or has used on of the 8 or 12 braid lines for anchor rode. Is it worth the cost of replacing three strand? Primarily does it in-fact take up half the space of three strand as claimed? And does it self-tend when retrieving/deploying with the windlass?

My main goal is to improve handling through the windlass so that at a minimum it will self-deploy and will retrieve cleanly enough for my first mate to handle the duties on deck. That means keeping it from stacking in the locker but no need to coil it down during retrieval.

Thanks in advance for any insight that may be offered.

I have 8 Plait. It does lay down flatter than the standard line. It is more pliable as well. You get more room, but I wouldn't say double. I have 30 feet of 5/16 chain and 200 feet of line. I still have to stay at the bow and distribute the line and chain. When I am all in I would say that I am about 6 inches from the bottom of the windless.
