Ordered 2 O-rings to put the rear heat exchanger cover on the Yanmar 4BY2-180 back on, and what looked like 2 small o-rings, was actually 1 o-ring folded up.

This is about 4 1/2 in. in diameter.

The zinc element came unscrewed from the threaded plug if you're wondering why.

At least I caught the dealer before they closed for weekend.

Hi Mike:

I just didn't think it was a good idea to let a zinc rattle loose around the heat exchanger for any lenghth of time.

Luckily there was a large, heavy duty metal grating between the cover where zinc mounts and the exchanger itself, so no damage done. Turns out maybe less than 10 percent of zinc was eaten up in a year.

Guess that means we need more time on the water.....

That top zinc does not deteriorate as quickly as the bottom. Did you inspect the heat exchanger tubes for any build up before you replaced the end cap? If so, how did they look?

Hi Mike:

Tube interiors seem to be ok, but some crud built up on outside of exchanger.

Looks like a stiff wire brush might do to remove. what do u suggest?

water volume exiting exhaust seems to be normal; no colored smoke, and temps have been normal.

have not put cap back on as waiting for 2nd o-ring to come from parts supplier.
