Obtaining USCG Documentation myself ?

Jim: When I call CG tomorrow I will pose the question: Does a new COD application require a "Bill Of Sale" ? There's absolutely no mention this is required in the form CG-1258.

I would just ask them for a list of exactly what forms are needed. Seems to me I provided all forms/documents listed and when I called to see what I was missing after they sent me the email, there was another form needed that was not listed.

I called/spoke with the USCG person today and I was given the following information for obtaining COD for my new boat.

1) Apply for COD after the new boat delivered to me.
2) Complete form CG-1258 and must be sign by me.
3) Have Builder (not Dealer or Agent but must be Fluid Motion, LLC - John Livingston or his representative) complete form CG-1261 and it must be signed by John Livingston or his representative.
4) Mail 2) and 3) along with a check for $133

Note
A Bill Of Sale is not required after the new boat is delivered to you for purposes of obtaining the COD. If the COD is required prior to the new boat being delivered to you then a Bill Of Sale is required and should be completed by the builder (not the Dealer or Agent), signed and Notarized.

Given the above, I will apply for the COD for my new boat after it has been delivered to me as this eliminates having to send a notarized Bill Of Sale.

We purchased a Cutwater 30S in October and submitted the application paperwork ourselves. It was straight forward and the only issue was a 16 dollar fee that I missed. They were helpful at the CG. I mailed the check and they sent me the new CG documentation number in the email. I am now just waiting for the final documentation documents.

With past boats I have retained a firm to do the documentation for me. Given my experience in self documenting I would not hire and pay anyone to help I the future.

I've negotiated with my Marine Title company to lower their fee for doing the COD to match what it would cost me to do it myself. Given that they did a good job with applying for the COD for my previous R27/OB I'm apt to simply let them do it and give myself a break and and to avoid running into issues that others here seemed to have had doing it as a DIY method.
